on the psychedelic sacrament...

"I thought that we might just survive and the planet with us if we could manage to get enough people to experience the view which the psychedelics sacraments give.  I know that some of you who will read this will object to the term sacrament, but the word is completely appropriate. With the advent of Christianity sacrament has come to be divested of the old meaning and to assume a more ephemeral definition.  The magical plants used by folks for tens of thousands of years have been for the most part forgotten.  People need to alter their perception of the world around them, in fact it seems to be something done by all animals.  In the west there is only two permitted options Alcohol and tobacco.  I'm not going to belabor the point, but this "choice" is not something which leads in any way to higher ground."

He's a saint of the psychedelic church, so many people have turned on because of him, he gave so much to the world, one of my heroes as well.

St. Bear on the "myth" of global warming:

"Global warming does not exist."

and this for hummer fans:

"Burning fossil fuels is probably one of the most important aids to the life cycle on this oxygen-rich, carbon-poor planet that man can do."

maybe half way down this page:
http://www.thebear.org/essays2.html#anchor506010

he also seems to think that spam, as in an all meat diet, is a good idea.

hmm. i guess one thing doesn't necessary lead to another.

and what about bacchanalia? if that isn't higher ground...

Bears the man.
His idea's and philosophy on other things can be quite extreme.
But his contributions as a chemist and as the Deads sound man are massive.
I have had the privalege to talk to him before and it was interesting.
His jewelry is beautiful. I have a belt buckle he made that is one of my most prized possesions.

Much of his ideas do seem a bit extreme to me, but when it comes to psychedelics, I agree with him 100%

On how he became the sound engineer for the Dead:

Seeing the dead at the Fillmore Acid Test confirmed his earlier notion that they were onto something special. "I met Phil," he said. "I walked over to him and said, 'I'd like to work for you guys.' Because I had decided this was the most amazing thing I'd ever run into. And he says, 'well we don't have a manager...' I said 'I don't think I want to be the manager.' He said, 'Well, we don't have a sound man,' And I said, 'Well, I don't know anything about that, either but I guess I could learn. Sounds like more fun.' That's how it happened."

It's amazing the way every thing just fell into place back then.
Jerry meeting Hunter in the early 60's. Hunter and Kesey getting dosed by the CIA via Stanford. The rest of the band falls into place and boom here comes Bear to give the movement the fuel it needs.
The band tours for 30 years and makes the experiance possible for anybody.
A lot of minds were opened in that 30 years. A lot of seeds were sown that we'll be see'ing fruit from forever.

As Jerry and Kesey say "We won"
