Elite - that's really old school. I used to play it on ZX Spectrum.
What about pre-historics like Manic Miner & Jet Set Willy. Anyone remember them?

Manic Miner was the shit, except that music:

duh duh duh duduhduduh duduhduduh duduhduhduh

Man I could talk about old skool games for ages. Thats the problem with being born in the seventies - its our generation.

The mid-late 80s was the best for arcades, who remembers Rygar, Bubble Bobble, Darwin, R-Type, jeez the list is endless, they were my favourites though. Also one of my faves was a game called X-Multiply - quite rare outside of Japan.

Go download mame32 - virtually every arcade game ever created is emulated perfectly in it.

Dammit see what you've started, bang goes my social life for the next week!

I have a soft-spot for Toonstruck (a cartoon adventure game). Virgin Interactive spent an insane amount of money (for the time) on hiring Christopher Lloyd and nobody played it.

--------------------
The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

You gotta check out Kings Quest if you have not already.

The first four games are in the old, text-command style and from number five on the mouse is used for control.  The games are made by Sierra and I think Roberta Williams wrote them all.  They fucking rock, IMHO.

STARCON 2!!!

that's one o the best RPGs ever for sure.

LEMMINGS!!!! (somebody is making a version for linux called pingus it's good too check it out)

BOMBER MAN BOMBER MAN BOMBER MAN[/x]

the bomber man for super nes.. bomber man and super bomber man are so fucking good when you have 3 or 4 people playing. Blows my mind every time I play it. So fun, so hectic. If you can find a super nes, buy it, and buy the 4 controllers and the adapter so that you can hook em all up then wait and wait and hope that one day you get bomberman it's so worth it.

The old C64 had quite a few hotties.
The original BombJack is a classic, and Creatures (1 and 2).
I have boxes full of the tapes in the attic.
Oh yeah and, Badlands and Supersprint were pretty hot in the arcades.

Now that I think of it, there are too many to list.

LOL.. a classic.
Also worthy of mention are Barbarian (1+2...they both came on the same tape), and IK+ (possible the two best arcade style fighting games ever made!).

I agree Toe Jam and Earl was pretty good too, for the MegaDrive/Genisis.

Howabout Powerdrift in the arcades, and outrun.
Oh yeah, and everyone must remeber Syndicate for the PC? Think I still have it somewhere!

"Black Tiger" arcade game was great, and the emulator I got for the PC works great. "Ghosts N Goblin" is another great side scroller.

"Wizard" for the C-64 was great.

"M.U.L.E." for the C-64 is probablymy favorite game of all time, or maybe the various computer versions of RISK. I like multiplayer competition an social interaction

http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/  For a DOS emulator that is quite useful for very old games, say pre-93, everything that doesn't use protected mode (dos4gw if you remember), without it pretty much nothing will run on W2K, XP has a 95/DOS compatibility mode that is rumored to work more often than not.

Good places to get old games:

www.the-underdogs.org < probably the best and most complete site (that I've found at least) for getting old games that the IDSA hasn't shut down yet
www.old-games.net < website for efnet #oldgames

IRC
undernet #oldwarez and #classicgames .. #classicgames has a trivia bot too, great fun
efnet #oldgames
Please do read the channel rules as you enter, you will just find yourself banned if you don't
Each of those chans usually has 50-120 people in them, you should be able to find a LOT, definitions of old range from pre-97 to 98 I think, requesting newer games will get you nowhere, except perhaps for a banlist. Many servers there also have a whole lot of emulation stuff.

(old games 3evah)

Well, they got those too. Just meant that you won't find anything newer than 97/98.

Games I enjoyed when I was littler:

Goldrush
Space Quest 1+2 (not 3)
Civilization
Colonization
Sokoban (though there are good clones out that won't give you hassle on newer systems)
TFX
Pinball Dreams/Fantasies
Wizardry 6/7 but they are a bitch to get running well, at least there's Wizardry Gold
Fallout1/2 were already mentioned but can't be mentioned enough, though fairly recent really
SimCity and SC2000
Some other Sim's like Earth, Life
Falcon 3.0
ALL LUCASARTS/LUCASFILM GAMES ADVENTURES
Red Baron/Aces of the Deep/Pacific/over Europe

There's so many more..

Didn't really like any Sierra adventures other than Gold Rush/SQ.. well, maybe Larry

That T-shirt you refer to has the NES controler on it, and it says "Stick to your roots," or something like that.

And the code for 30 lives?

Up. Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, B, A, select, start!
How could you forget?!

Anyway, yes, I'll have to agree with some of the following postes:
Ghosts and Goblins (though when I play it now, it doesn't seem as much fun)
The OLD King's Quest were my favorites. I would spend weeks on end playing these games. AWESOME and VERY creative! Go online and look for a hint list if you can't beat a certian part within a week!
Maniac Masion for NES (you guys have been referring to part 1, though I was unaware that there was a part 2. Any good?)
Spot (Another NES game that I have a hard time finding. Cool puzzle/strategy game, somewhat like a warped checkers. Nice Challenge. You know the red dot in between the "7" and the "Up" on a 7Up can? Well, there you go!)

The C64 had a HUGE amount of games. I don't see how any one site could possibly cover all of them.

Great thread guys!

Peace.

Peace.

Yes, there are roms for an emulator named MAME (run a search its easy to get). The roms arent to hard to find either, even up to more current games. I have been playing D&D:shadow over mystarra and a ton of old shooters/puzzle/fighters.

Heres a link to a good site with a shitload of cool games: http://www.emuparadise.org/roms/cps2/ You can play all the CPS2 and arcade games on MAME.

Someone did mention the Monkey Island games (which were badasss), but did anyone ever play The Neverhood? It was a mid-nineties PC adventure/puzzle game, that was completely done in claymation. He lived in this real tripped-out clay world, and the game was just brilliant.

You can also never go wrong with SNES Super Mario World, and the sequel, Yoshi's Island.

Master of Orion 2 kicked ass! I spent hours and hours playing that game.

MOO3 sucked so bad. I had such high hopes for it, but I totally got ripped off. There are so many bugs in that game it's not even funny.

Moonstone is the one old game that holds a spot in my heart. I even tried to get it running on Windows 98 with an emulator for Amiga, but had no luck getting it to run flawlessly. It would run, but the game's graphics/sounds were slowed down, and completely unplayable.
If anyone here actually managed to get it to run on Windows, let me know, cause I'd love to get that game up and running again. I miss it *sniff*

Yukon Trail?? No no no, it's all about the Oregon Trail DOS-style, or Oregon Trail II was much fun too also on windows. And Contra...ahhh, I had forgotten the 30 lives code, I'm glad I did though. Due to the fact that my friend & I dug out my NES this summer & find CONTRA. We went berzerk & immediately smoked some fat bowls & started going out at it. As I remembered Contra was quite hard for me back in the day & I never did beat it. When we started that day we sucked. But after about 2 weeks of getting really high & then playing CONTRA, defeat after defeat, finally we did it! We celebrated & smoked a victory blunt. Ahhh, beating Contra, now that was satisfaction.

The old Sierra games were awesome.

I got into gaming later, but here are my pics by system

DOS
Ultima 6 and 7-Got me into PRG's
Wolfenstein and then Duke Nukem 3D (inverted mouse though :P)

win95/98
Fallout 1 and 2, best fucking games ever made
System shock 2
Starcraft
Dungeon Keeper 2 (I loved the style, what can I say).

The perk with fallout 1, fallout 2 and system shock 2 is you can get them to work on XP, but it can be a bear. Hell I beat system shock 2 twice again in the past month or so. Between gaming and mushrooms I dno't get much sunshine...
