having trouble
    #16212965 - 05/10/12 11:42 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

so i start with my brf jars...  they colonize quick and full.  next i lay some pasturized straw with my jars. the straw looks great thick and fuzzy. i lay  a 50% verm 50% peat with a cup or so of gypsum. and i can never seem to get decent yeilds...  the caps come from the sides of my container mostly and only a FEW ever come from the top of the casing layer....    discouraged

Any pics?? And did you tape the sides of your tubs? Or anything to block the light from coming in from the sides?

I dont follow are you spawning brf to bulk sub in a monotub?  If so it sounds like you arent getting the proper conditions on top of the substrate for fruiting hence why you get side fruits.  Try misting heavier but keep up the fanning.  Is your container have clear sides if so do you tape around the substrate or use a garbage bag as a liner?  Or try the wax paper trick.

Also have you just tried fruiting the cakes out in a SGFC?

Also the 50/50+ casing should be verm/peat and lime.  Gypsum will help keep the ph balanced but not as good of a buffer as lime.

But Casing is optional for cubes.  (Now i never worked with straw so i could be wrong but I have never read anywhere that it was required)

You need to have a bulk substrate that holds a lot of moisture but still has a good texture.

Coir  35%
Horse Manure  35%
vermiculite  20%
gypsum  5%

water +  bulk with some nutrients = big fruit bodies

even hydration will get fruiting on the top of your substrate

good luck to you

On my understanding a casing layer should have no nutrients so dont use any gypsum,,thats for your bulk substrate,,if pins are coming from the side its because of light getting to them ,black it out with tape or a garbage bag or both

In RR video he uses horse poo with 20% verm and 10% gypsum(shrooms need gypsum),,make sure the poo is well aged or well leached and dried in the sun (6 months prefered)

Horse poo is best but straw works well but contams more easily, this is because the poo has had actinomytes(bacteria) through it

Pasterize both Substrate and Casings,,also dont put casing on until substrate is fully colonized

I like to use ryches 50/50 , if you hit the tab at the top of the page that says Mushroom info then go grow mushrooms /general cultivation you will get a list of helpful pages,,you cant go wrong

I myself like LC its so fucking easy, then to grain(colonizes fast)then horsepoo then case all in a monotub

Also spray heaps of Lysol ect in the air bout half an hour ,then again just before you open tubs to inoculate or anything for that matter also dunk tubs in bleach before you use them and shower and brush your teeth,,if you got Isopropyl Alch use it to clean hands ect

Sounds to me like you just don't have high enough humidity in your growing chamber, that's generally the case when you only get growth around the edges. Also, I've always found I never get great yields when using straw.
