Cool Mist or Ultrasonic Humidifier?
    #1618465 - 06/08/03 02:10 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

I've read through the Humidifier Tek and decided to buy one off of the internet. Since the prices are about the same, which one is preferred, and why?

a cool mist is the best way to go for a small terrarium and lots of air exchange, but cannot keep up the rh in larger chambers. US give out too much humidity and have to be on a timer or reduced somehow, but give out the best humidity, meaning you need an auto fanning system in a large chamber, but works wonders in general. check out the faq's for the humidifier comparison.

Ultrasonic Humidifier

Pros:
Plenty of gas exchange. (When they are turned on.)
Creates a dense mist

Cons:
Ultrasonic transducer part is prone to failure
Quickly over saturates.
No constant air exchange.

Non-Evaporative Cool-Mist Humidifier

Pros:
High rate of constant gas exchange
Little chance of over saturation.
Filtered air intake.

Cons:
Some modification required. (router)
Some models do not have a low water shut off feature. Potential safety hazard.

Wet Perlite Layer

Pros:
Inexpensive to use and no cost to operate.
Will not over saturate.

Cons:
No gas exchange
Can be messy.
Possible breeding area for microbes.

Ultrasonic Fogger

Pros:
Raises rH quickly.
The fog is pretty.

Cons:
Ultrasonic transducer is prone to failure.
Risk of over saturation.
No gas exhcange.
Takes up space in terrarium.

Others will likely have others pros and cons to add.

I beg to differ. I have an ultrasonic humidifier that has the slide on it so you can crank her way down. It's the Vick's model of ultrasonic, prolly on their website, got mine at Wally World. I leave it running all the time on the lowest setting and it only introduces a gallon's worth of mist in a day and a half. That's not that much water if you have good air exchange.

I suggest you use an ultrasonic humidifier, not only do new ones have great electronic controls to control humidity levels, but also disinfects the water as it dissipates it ultrasonically. less chance of contaminations. Just my opinion though

I think I'm going to go with an older cool mist model. Thanks for the replies.

I'd just like to add that a funky chicken just returned a Cool Mist because the damn thing had no major effect on RH. Same damn chicken's gonna buy an ultrasonic instead.

for small ammounts there are is no point to these machines right?

But an ultrasonic may be worth my time if I want to grow 20 cakes at once or a bunch of casings ...etc??

Couldnt I just go ...."hardcore" with the perlite and use tons of it ?

or is it really that worth it to get the ultra?

Ultrasonic is worth it.  You'll have it for years, so guess the # of cakes you'll grow over your career and then divide the cost of the US by that number.  Not that expensive anymore is it?

Interesting. I'm concerned mainly because of the reports that the Ultrasonic's break down alot. The only problem is, no one can really tell me how often they break. I'm growing about 6 cakes at a time right now with a fish tank bubbler, but between my two tier double terranium setup, I could grow a maximum of around 25 cakes. I need a setup where I only need to check on it once every 72 hours which is why I'm looking at buying a humidifier.

There are many variables.

Product quality:
Of course, if you buy a product of inferior quality, you could expect the product to be of inferior dependability.

Maintenance:
Expect prolonged usefulness with regular and proper maintenance. Clean the transducer regularly with a mineral dissolving agent. A weekly one to one dilution of vinegar and water should keep your parts deposit free for a long time.

Water quality:
Tap and well water of many cities contain minerals that could build up on your transducer. Using distilled water will reduce any mineral deposits on your transducer.

Just like many machines, your humidifier is as reliable as the quality of manufacture, maintenance and what you put in it.

once you find a solution that works for you (ultrasonic or cool mist) stop by your local goodwill/savation army once a week and you will find an extra every 2 months or so for $5.00. It is good to stay ahead of equipment failure with some backup equipment.

Excellent idea Raedon. I'll visit one this week, since my equipment won't arrive for another two weeks.

Hi, I was reading this thread and trying to make some decisions.  I have room I am setting up that is 8X10X8 and want to set something up.  What kind of ultrasonic fogger would I need?  Does something like this do it?  Can I put this in a large tub/reservoir and pipe it in the room with fans?
