Any dreads?
    #16211012 - 05/10/12 05:10 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Anyone out there have dreads?

I have been debating it for a while and have decided to go ahead and do it.  I've just done a single lock by myself to make sure I like the look of it.  So far, so good.  I'll keep taking care of it until I book help for the rest.  My hair is almost to my nipples.

..going to hire a 'professional' to do the rest.  I might leave some of the hair un-dreaded for a more unkempt look.  I don't plan on ever adding product to it.

Let's see some pics!

I learned my technique from this chick (unfortunately, no matter how good my dreads turn out I'll never be as beautiful as she):

At one point my hair went dready on its own, it's pretty curly normally though. I might let it go like that again if I didn't need to impersonate an upstanding citizen some of the time, a beard and long hair make that tricky enough. I don't like the look of "made" ones really, like those perfectly uniform cylindrical ones. I figure you should just let your hair do its own thing more or less and only intervene if it clumps more than you want it to.

Agreed.. I've decided to go ahead and do it as I still have a year of schooling left and am doing well freelancing.  If I need to get a second part-time job, I'm sure some health food store will take me.

I also dislike the look of the perfectly cylindrical dreads.

I used to have long hair. I never brushed it once since it was almost a shaved head and it turned into a nappy puffy head of half dreads

I miss that mop head :frown:

Some white guys look a little less like they are living on their parents' money while wearing dreads.

Never ever seen a white guy make it look good. And relatively few black men.

Haha, well I'm white as shit so we'll see how it goes.

If I end up hating them, I'll be able to brush them back out.

How are they? Got any pics?

I'm thinking I might just go ahead and do the rest myself.  It's not hard at all but is very time consuming.  I'll have to set aside a weekend.  I imagine I'll be smoking a lot that weekend.

If you can brush them out they aren't dreadlocks. :snub: Have clippers at the ready.

I've seen a rare few white women make dreads look ok. You have girly hips?

If you get dreads and don't like them you CAN brush them

I have done it a few times....

You can not brush them out if they are fully formed and you had them for a long time. But if you decided you don't like them after a month or so, you can give yourself a deep conditioning treatment and brush them out. It will hurt like a mother fucker and you will lose some hair but it can be done....:doublefacepalm:

They are well.  I have found it challenging to keep them not so fuzzy having white boy hair.  But I enjoy having them.  I do not really have any pics as of yet, I got them for very personal reasons and have not really taken the time to sort of broadcast the information.  In fact I wore a hat for the first couple months.
