Slow pinning?
    #16208086 - 05/10/12 12:28 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

First signs of pinning appeared 2 days ago and since then the pins have only grown about 5-6mm-does that seem rather slow? The humidity is sitting just under 90% at like 88% and I believe that slow growth is usually due to lack of humidity? but 88% humidity really doesn't seem that low... And considering I already killed everyone with the questions I have one more, is lack of fae a possibility for slow growth?

The most important pinning triggers are FAE and full colonization of the substrate.

So...

Once your substrate was 100% colonized, how long did you let it consolidate (i.e, how long did you leave it in colonizing conditions after it was already 100% covered?)

88% humidity may not seem low to you but cubes sure do like it to be high.  I would say ideally you'd want at least something like 95%.  Otherwise you risk them being too dry, not having enough moisture and growing ineffectively.  Now, with 88% humidity you could still produce mushrooms, they'd just not be what they could have been.

I'd almost bet they're growing slow because they're on the dry side.  If you can't raise the humidity inside your fruiting chamber, try misting them more often.  But be careful not to overdo it, you can make them too wet and be very prone to contamination.

BUT just because you see pins doesn't mean they're going to blow up overnight.  It's normal to see pins not do much for a few days.

...  Wait for some other experienced growers to shed some light.

it all depends.  i've had some that  blow up fast and others that seem to take forever.  but i definitely prefer the slower ones cuz they seem to grow more solid imo

So there's two cakes.. one that I let consolidate a good week and then the other which I'm not to sure about-I think 2 days. The one that consolidated for a week is showing the signs of pinning whereas the other hasn't really shown any just some mycelium knots. And yeah I haven't really been spraying the cakes at all just the sides of the terrarium. See the thing is, my sprayer isn't very effective, it's not a streaming bullet but it's not as misty as it could be and I'm rather concerned it'll do some damage to my pins. But for sure, I'ma try misting em more. Thanks!

Yeah I'ma kinda experiencing that myself actually, in a slightly different manner. One of my brf jars that was 90% colonized yesterday had a little check up this morning and boom! there were literally pins all over the place...there was actually a pin 3x as large as the pin on my fc cake that's been growing for 2 days lol wtf is that?

It's always good to let your substrates consolidate.

Think of it like this...

Your mycelium is going to spend that time consolidating before pinning anyway, so may as well do it while it's contained (before fruiting) and safe.  Because if you fruit it anyway, it's going to consolidate, it's just going to do it out in the open.

It's sooo easy to want to fruit ASAP but just remind yourself that you're not really saving any time in doing so and you'll be better off in the end.
