Need help with my coir cakes!!!!!
    #16198443 - 05/08/12 04:54 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hey guys, i spawned some brf cakes to coir/coffee/verm at a 1/3 ratio using this tek  about 8 weeks ago now and progress has been slow.

The cake has been incubating at about 22C (71.6F) and the minimum temp has been about 20C (68F) but that has only been on occasions, it has never sat at 20C for more than a few hours.

It seems to have shrunk but only a tiny amount e.g. the cake has slightly receded from the bottle wall but not enough to make me think its too dry.

Growth was pretty slow for the first 5 weeks but it seems to have slowed down even more since then! As you can see from the pictures below the myc has not colonised the bottom of the bottle! there are also small patches of coir that have what looks like a light covering of myc over them but nothing like the thick myc you get on brf cakes.

The cake definitely smells nice and mushroom like and there are no signs of contams as far as i can see. There does seem to be signs of metabolites or "myc piss" but i've heard these can be used to break down the sub not just to fight bacteria???

So what should i do? Bump up the temp? Re-hydrate the cake? Break it up real good and put the sub back into the bottle to continue colonizing?

Thanks for reading, hope you can help!

Sorry if this is a noobish question but why is that gonna help? what is the theory behind laying it on its side?

thanks.

first off if thats a 20 oz bottle or even a 1 or 2 liter, it should NOT take 8 weeks to colonize something that small, especially at the stage its at.

even if it was a huge tub with 15 qts of spawn at a 1:3 ratio it shouldnt take 8 weeks...

it looks good but still, somethings up.

Why is the foil on? How are you getting gas exchange?

The texture of coir can make it difficult for myc to colonize it, so less pressure = more room for myc to colonize.

Is anyone else surprised after 8 weeks there isn't any signs of metabolites from the myc eating stuff?

Not really, if his sub is too wet or if there's no gas exchange it will stall myc growth.

To your question: "Is anyone else surprised after 8 weeks there isn't any signs of metabolites from the myc eating stuff?"

I've had stalled jars that were two months old that had no metabolites. They looked fine except they took forever to colonize. This was many, many years ago BTW, I forgot the reason why my jars stalled because it was so long ago. I think no gas exchange if I remember correctly.

Indeed.  What then causes the metabolites?

OP, sorry to half-way thread jack.

That I am not sure of, I think I read something on this matter in one of Staments' books. I mostly notice the production of metabolites after the cake/grain is completely colonized...or if there is some kind of contamination too I guess.

The foil acts as a lid of which gas exchange holes have been punched!

Correct me if im wrong but isnt "myc piss"  a metablite? and i never said there isn't any signs of them!

You are correct, myc piss is a metabolite.  I just had found it odd that after 8 weeks there was none.  But that is due, as pointed out by Chez, to the substrate not being fully colonized.  I take that to mean that the myc knows it hasn't fully colonized its substrate and is eager to colonize more.

I see!

Does anyone have any idea why the colonization is taking so long?

C02 is heavier than oxygen and nitrogen, if the gas exchange is poor it will pool at the bottom of your container. If you but your container on its side it will encourage gas exchange on the bottom of your container. I have put semi colonized jars upside down to finish them off if they stall. just don't move them around too much, they will finish in their own sweet time. Poor gas exchange is one possible reason they are going slow, too much moisture is another. It is better to have the substrate too dry than too wet.
