nothing happening
    #1620285 - 06/09/03 11:34 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

this is my first attempt at growing shrooms, I inocculated my jars waited for them to colonize and put them in my terranium with the humidity at 95% and my temp at 78 my cakes have been in the terranium for seven days and nothing has changed. Everything that i have read has given me the impression that i should see pin heads by now i don't know if something is wrong or im just impatient.

It seems the answer to many questions here is...

patience.

That is very true. Conditions vary greatly from area to area and person to person. As long as you are giving good conditions there isn't much we can do besides wait. They WILL fruit (unless contaminated in some way), just have to keep giving favorable contidions and go do something to pass the time.

I've never recommended cold shocking, I've heard good results but I think it's a last option. Cold shocking seems to mess with things further down the road with later flushes.

dunking is when you submerge your cakes under water for 24-48 hours(or more but don't go overboard they can die) too rehydrate the cakes since they lose a lot of water when colonizing the substrate...you generally will have bigger fruits and more of them this way...I'm not sure if it increases the time tho...I have always dunked so I don't have a comparison...never cold shocked tho...but...a few days is not that long...it can take a couple weeks so like others have suggested just be patient the fruits will come if you have the humidity right ....also don't forget too fan them a couple times a day....this will help too get pins faster as well....and be on the lookout for little bumps that resemble a rash....once you see this pins are almost there

you can look them up in our nifty FAQ or just do a Search. For the quick answer, dunking is submerging your colonized substrate in water (for ever long you wish, 12 to 24 hours I believe is the norm). This isn't neccesary but it seems to have a few benifits. Cold shocking is dropping the temp of the colonized substrate, usually done by putting it in the fridge. Over night should be good, I think 8 hours is the norm on this one.

LiL- I have no doubt that you have gotten great results but can you compare cold shocked and not alone. For many people cold shocking seems to mess with the cycle a little bit, nothing dramatic.

give it time once took 2 weeks in fruiting conditions to form pin heads and then almost a week to full grown just be patient you will wake up one morning and find massive pinning took place

On the subject of cold shocking, it's a good method, but often misused. The problem is that if you put your cakes in the fridge, the other fruiting conditions (i.e light levels and humidity) are lowered. What i've found to be a better method is to freeze those blue blocks that are used to cool down coolboxes and coolbags, and to bung them into the terrarium, close to but not touching the cakes. Temperature goes down, humidity stays up. peasy.
