putting a rheostat on a 12v DC bilge blower
    #16199524 - 05/08/12 11:47 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I want to put a rheostat on a 12v DC Attwood bilge blower. I've read that it may be a fire hazard to put a rheostat on an AC motor, and the specs of this bilge blower say its DC. I can't find much about putting a rheostat on one of these

so i figured I'd just ask. Sorry if its already been answered. So is this okay to do given the specs of the fan? Any suggestions on what kind of rheostat wattage or ohm type stuff may be the safest/best bet? i have a 3watt 25 ohm rheostat from Radio Shack for a stir plate already

What is this going to be used for?  Air + humidity or just air?  If it's just for FAE why not use a 12v DC computer case fan?  They're cheaper and more energy efficient than the fan you linked.  I wouldn't use one for a high humidity flow though, as they often just have a paper sticker covering the axle and internal components.  Either way, you aren't going to find a rheostat for a high power fan at Radio Shack.  The model you linked would be over 30w and the only places I know of that sell those would be DIY (audio) supplies or for computers (case fan controllers).

Thanks for the links. I want to use it mainly for re-circulation and FAE intake in a Martha, the common 19x35x6 size. I'd like to slow it down so that it won't possibly dry out. hence wanting to slow the fan down again. I haven't built this yet and am hoping to eliminate any possible problems beforehand. any input is greatly appreciated.
