grass clippings might be a cheaper alternative for the straw on top, and less likely noticed for anyone who may be doing it in a not so secure area.
other than that your plan sounds good. I've never started outdoors with fresh spawn, keep us posted? Haven't seen many good outdoor logs either, though I haven't been looking for them.

Sounds like a good plan to me, you should definitely log this
What type of spawn are you using, rye? And what substrate will you be adding?
If you need any inspiration... I recently disposed of some old spawn out back. I'm too shy about going up to people who have cows on their property to ask them for some poop, so I bought some composted manure from the hardware store called Moo-Nure. But the myc didn't seem to like it a whole lot. The squirrels and birds and such dug up the patch to get at the rye berries, those rascals nearly destroyed everything.
I gave up on babying the patch since it appeared to be dead or dying after a few weeks. I never did cover the patch with plastic to let it recover/colonize the Moo-Nure, I think that's likely why it began to fail. In a last ditch effort to salvage the poor myc, I placed a flower pot over the patch. The myc seemed very grateful for that gesture, and it appears to be making a full recovery. Fungus never ceases to amaze me. I think I'll remove the pot soon and cover the patch with straw or perhaps pine needles.
I took some pictures today (not hijacking your thread, just trying to offer up a little inspiration):

pine needles with raise the ph in the soil, go with straw.hay, or even a 50/50 casing
the substrate i want to use is straw, some coir, some peat and a little of my secret substrate, i will be using wild bird seed as spawn most likely a 2 step , first colonize some of my secret substrate and the coco coir, then spawn that to the straw in the hole,
but im also going to line the hole with 1x4s on the side and cut up cardboard squares on the bottom, size i have a bunch of old gen plates of agar all colonized with Argentina i will sandwich those bewteen the cardboard, and let it kinda colonize well the spawn is getting ready, give me a chance to use my Argentina lc ive been waiting to try
