Most Likely a Stupid Question
    #1619562 - 06/09/03 01:49 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Would it be possible to just get a syringe and inject it into the ground somewhere...lets say a backyard of some sort and have them grow that way?

srry for the second post. The grey squirrel tossed one in the ground, then out of curiosity, dug it up 2 weeks later, the mycelium has spread through a lot of the surrounding dirt, now the clump is 4x bigger than the original cake was.

I have put cakes in the ground after seeing someone here at the shroomery do it.

I never got to grow a full cubie outside though as slugs got to them!, the little bastards really seem to love mushrooms.

I planted a cake that I was worried about in the ground and a couple in my compot and both were ravaged.

Anyway it does work, and from what I can tell even contam cakes sometimes get "fixed" by mother nature.

Nature seems to have fixed the cake the grey squirrel tossed in the hole, like i said he dug it up again, and it was much bigger than before.. and puure white (except the dirt, of course) before, it had green patches, he didn not see any of them any more.

Note:

The grey squirrel dug a hole an inch deeper than the cake was tall. set the cake in the hole right side up. Filled in around the cake sides with organic compost from the hardware store I work at. Then he added the dirt that was in the hole before. After that, he moved some of the dead grass and stuff back over the top. The soil seems to stay pretty moist, and the faucet leaks a little on it when the sprinklers are on the rest of the yard (they barely if at all hit the cake site, which is between two shrubs. that meet eachother about 10 inches above the ground, nice little shady area all day)

Outdoor cultivation does work, but not as simple as you suggested.

If you want an outdoor patch, try innoculating a few jars, then burying your cakes. It works, but don't be too upset if your local critters have a party with it.

Don't stick anything in your yard unprotected that you can't afford to lose.

The sexual implications are crawling all over that.

for slugs/snails, put a circle of rock salt around then, for other critters, there are products you can add to the salt circle
