Remove verm from jar before dunk?

Should you remove the vermiculite from the jar when first dunking your PF cakes before birthing?

You mean the protective verm layer btwn the lid and the cake right? I gues it's up to your personal preference....Persnally, my cat removed the verm layer then added the water. If you don't remove it, just make sure you add enough water to fully saturate the cake and the verm on top.

Yes I do. But then, I just fill the jar with water and put to fridge for 12 hours.

So are there any drawbacks to dunking your cakes? I am doing this for the first time, and would like to try it.

It could introduce contamination into the cake, but most find that the mycelium can handle it.

According to focus, if there are invitro pins, they will water log and fall off.. the grey squirrel's mostly all stayed on though, he did break them off when drying the cake with a paper towel (on purpose).

He removes his verm layer, births the cake, fills the jar with water, then inserts the cake upside down in to the water, tops off the water, places a foil ball on top of the cake, then adds the lid, fridge for 12 hours. Remove from jar, remove sitting water from cake with paper towel, do whatever else your going to do.

The grey squirrel has started using double end casing, and chronic "invitro" tek (quart jars). His double end casings are making bigger mushrooms than a plain cake.
