Im from Melbourne, in Aus, I've so far only had failed attempts at mushroom hunting. Can anybody help me out with this. Information such as which mushrooms i should be on the lookout for, which poisonous ones to watch out for and which areas to look in would be greatly appreciated. I don't have a car so i can't drive anywhere. But going by public tansport what are good areas to go hunting in? I was thinking about heading out to Hurstbridge... Are there any good places to search closer to the city? What times of the day are best? THank you anyone for your help !

you're looking for psilocybe subaeruginosa. do a search in this forum for them, you'll find lots of successful hunting photos here. they grow in woodchips/pine mulch/eucalypt mulch, have a purple/brown sporeprint and bruise blue strongly (especially on the stems when handled).

Prefectly said! Watch out for anything with a brown spore print, an annular ring or a red/pink cap. Hurstbridge is a nice area. Look for the pine trees. These are bad:
 These are good:

These are poisonous Gallerina - note the annular ring:
and here is the gills of a common Marismius species that is mistaken for subaeruginosa - not poisonous but not active
 and ur friends again:

The above are sterile gills - the start that colour, before turning purple brown. always check the spore print.
