Experimental Growth.
    #16192073 - 05/06/12 08:23 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

My name is Hippieman, and i was online looking up information on growing my very own mushrooms- Yesterday i had manure and a spray bottle, i had some caps (hopefully for the spores) and stems(i wasnt sure if it was going to grow) i crushed up  and planted within the manure,Sterilized, and im keeping in a moist temperature controlled enviroment getting a fair amount of sun and i have two of my friends watering it when i go to school. Unfortunatly i am unsure if this is a lost cause- if the fungus wont accept or wont be able to grow on the manure. I put my heart into these mushrooms but i only know basic information i learned from documentarys about growing them. I read a few intellectual articles, and everyone really knows what they are doing. Please, let me explain how i made a homemade mushroom growing kit. I Got an empty plastic container, and added manure to it, then i did a very thin spray of water on the manure because it was sitting for a little while and i figured moisture would help-not harm. I added the spores and buried them under a thick layer of manure (unsterilized i may assume?) and i hoped and prayed that i would find success. I covered it with plastic wrap and poked 6 holes in the top, and i walked around with it in the sun to bond with them. This is my first time growing mushrooms, and I really would appreciate your help with whatever information or tips you can give me.

Now just recently, i see mycelium or a thin white surface growing on my manure--- my biggest question is what do i do now?.
PLEASE- if anyone can help me, i would be in theyre debt.
Are my shrooms going to be sucessful or not?

Seriously.  You need to back up and start reading the teks.  This is highly unlikely to work.

First off, where'd you get the mushroom spores to start off this project with?  Did you grow them yourself?

Second.  Manure is great but it must be pastuerized first.  Then your mycelium will have a fighting chance to outrun contamination.

Third.  You don't just plant spores in manure.  You take spores and make them into cakes (a la BRF) or agar dishes or grain or something.  Then you put THAT in your pasteurized manure.

If it was as easy as just putting spores into manure and walking around in the sun, it would be a fine life.

Actually it is a fine life. But you're going to have to work a little harder.

Start by reading the info at the top of this page under "Mushroom Info."  Watch Roger Rabbit's mini-movies.

Happy growing!
