Bike Theft vs. Marijuana Possession: Why the Drug War Makes Me Angry
    #16191720 - 05/06/12 07:10 PM (11 years, 9 months ago)

So I had another bike stolen\, worth about $900. This is the third bike I've had stolen in the last ten years. The first was worth about $1300, the second about $700, and this one. Each of them paid with hard-earned money that I worked for.

I went down to the police station to report the theft, and asked if there was any chance that I'd ever get my bike back. The the officer just chuckled at me, gave me a look, shrugged his shoulders, and said that bikes get stolen all the time. He put me off on the report by telling me that I'd have to go back and dig up some bike ID number before he could fill it out. I got the message loud and clear that a police report was a waste of everyone's time, and blew it off.

What really upset me was the nonchalance with which the problem is dismissed. Here is a case with a clear crime (theft) and a clear victim (yours truly). If you live in pretty much any big city, you'll probably agree that bike theft is rampant, especially if you have a nice model. What's being done? Nothing.

That's the way that things are, right? Yet, untold sums of cash are spent enforcing drug laws. Who exactly is the victim if one smokes a J and watches a movie on a Friday night? How about we take some of that cash spend on the drug war and create a war on bike theft???

:mad2:

Why do you keep letting your bike get stolen?

I'm sorry you lost your bike.  But I am failing to see what this has to do with anything.

If they had your bike's serial # they would give it to bike/pawn shops and put it on watch...  It's not like they didn't care they were just trying to break it to you nicely that you're probably not going to get it back.

Well I'm not exactly "letting" them get stolen. Each time they were locked up.

- The first lock was a cable and it was clipped at the beach.
- The second was a thicker cable, but I left it locked up for four hours in a not-so-good neighborhood. Someone said that they saw a couple of guys smash the lock with a hammer.
- The third was an orange Krypto. This one still puzzles me... The bike was taken, but the lock was still on the rack where I left it?! Not sure how they got this one.

That makes me no better than the scumbag lowlifes that stole my other bikes. I won't even fund this system by buying a stolen bike of craigslist.

use like 6 different bike locks at once.

make it so that they really have to have a goddamned struggle to get your bike.

That's pretty much where I've arrived. I bought three old Ross bikes from garage sales and fixed em up a bit. Now, instead of spending 1k for one nice bike, I spent $300 for THREE bikes that get me around fairly well--although the brakes kinda suck--but nobody seems to want to steal them.

At the same time, this sucks, because I work hard, and would like to buy a nice bike, but it will just get stolen.

If I saw someone with a hello kitty bike and pink streamers the first three things I'd suspect.
1. Drug user
2. Borrowing sisters
3. Drug dealer

The one and only time I reported a bike stolen, the cop demanded to know what I was doing at the mall that it was stolen outside of, and when I told him (visiting someone who went to an alternative school that was in the mall) he didn't believe me that the school existed. WTF does that have to do with my bike? Complete waste of time.

Because cops will question you for anything just so they can try to charge you.

I would trust many, many, many people in this world before I'd ever trust a cop.

Yeah, I imagine it was probably something to do with me having long hair at the time. But what possible motive would I have for making the story up? It's not like they were too likely to give me someone else's bike. Hell, I didn't seriously expect them to find it or anything, I just thought reporting a theft was what you were supposed to do.
