Horse poo.. Concerning the horses diet affecting their poo poo
    #16191761 - 05/06/12 07:19 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

So I know horses mainly eat hay and grass...  Usually their owners will bring out a bail for them to eat on, but they graze on grass all day too.

Any "literature" on the diets of the horses in relation to nutrient content of poo?  Any opinions?

I've used horse poo that obviously has a lot of hay in it and horse poo that has more grass in it.  Always seems to me that mycelium prefers the grass-filled poo versus the hay-filled poo.  I know it doesn't make that big of a difference, but it has to make some difference.

Any thoughts?

Horses eat hay not straw, Straw holds no nutritional value for horses and is only used as bedding.
That being said horses that are allowed to pasture (allowed to graze in a open field) are likely to produce far more nutitonal poo than horses kept in a stall and fed only hay.

That's what I was thinking.  I mean, there are nutrients in grass so surely the mycelium takes advantage.

Then again, I don't really ever see horses that aren't allowed to graze, so I guess it doesn't matter anyway haha

Also, I fixed my post.  I know horses eat hay, I must have wrote straw because so many people use straw in their substrate lol

Just pointing out that there is a difference between hay and straw.
