Dry shocking... (??)
    #1618898 - 06/08/03 05:45 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

My fruiting chamber shows signs of being overly humid, and there is always a lot of water condensed on the top of the lid. Is there any merit to "dry shocking" the cakes into pinning (I read somewhere... probably here... that pinning occurs best at a RH slightly below 100), because currently I have 5 cakes that went in all at roughly the same time and only one is pinning for some reason. The growing shrooms also show strange growth that I have not seen... they have thick bases but then thin out drastically about 1/2 inch up the stipe. What is causing this?

I'm using perlite, but I've been keeping it pretty heavily sprayed (there isn't water sitting on the bottom, but there ALMOST is).

The perlite by itself should be enough for the humidity. I have the same homeless man's terrarium (rubbermaid, perlite on bottom, heating pad underneath, that's it!) and my hygrometer consistently reads above 94% rh. I never spray...not because I don't wan't to I'm just lazy, and humidity is fine. I'm not saying that high humidity is the root of your problem, (if you even have a problem) or that lowering humidity will help, but I think spraying is probably unnecessary for you.
