Camping Suggestions - Need a spot in Southern California

Looking for a unique/cool/ or secluded camping spot in California. Going camping soon, and I'm looking for a nice spot. Will be driving around 4 to 6 hours. So anything up towards sequoia, greater los angeles, orange county, and san diego is doable. Do do you guys have any suggestions for campgrounds?
I've considered Sequoia, Joshua Tree, and Big Sur. Also if I could add, have anyone heard of Los Padres National Park? Some personal experiences from that park would be really great. Thank you!

I know Joshua tree and big bear well. Bear better, have a few good spots up there.

This thread was moved from The Pub.
Reason: You will probably get a better response here, and the thread will last longer.
Also I would definitely agree with Big Bear.

look into the yellow post sites. they are off the beaten path so you don't have to deal with shit tons of people. the last one i stayed at was way up on the mountain about 40 minutes off of pavement (roads were OK though, no 4 wheel drive) and over looked like 10 lines of mountains fading into the desert.

If you haven't seen a giant sequoia in person then I highly suggest checking that out. Unfucking believably huge trees.

There is free camping in the sequoias all over. Depends what experience your looking for. Want to be a raging river or do you want to be in deep woods with nice small creeks and deer and bears? I suggest going north of lake isabella near johnsondale, ca.

here are some pics from me and some shroomerites backpacking trip there

yeah that swimming hole was so deep we couldn't touch the bottom in the middle

hard to believe it is so close to socal. These pics are from 5 miles in on the Sepse river trail but the campground at the trailhead is also very nice.
I've actually backpacked here pretty extensively, 10 miles in there is an old settlement and a hotsprings.
me smoking hookah at a makeshift camp on the river

there are old shacks and tables for use. Really nice spot. This last group of photos was from the winter, when it looks pretty dead and the water is low. Springtime and summer are beautiful

Los padres you say? I went there with my two close homies with around 20grams of dank socal medicine to cure our illnesses.
Oh and primus was there. ..was so fuckin sick.
PRIMUS SUCKS!
But ya we camped at padres for a few nights, visited this chill water hole , which was very relaxirelaxing at hot weather. And a few more paths, was really nice. Had a great time.
Oh did I mention I brought the bingus with me on evry expedition. Had an alright sesh with Almeria ucsb kids. ..fuckin didn't even know how to take a hit and was obviously ripped off, maybe 100bucks he said for like 3 g of what alright.
But the campsite was chill, our attendant guy was this crazy old chill cat with a few rifles in his gangster motorhome.
Fun time. Go there. Skies Stars Satellites

Los Padres has a lot of micro climates. Sespe creek can be a long hot hike to Willett hot springs or Sespe hot springs. Bear Creek camp in realfuzzheads post is only a few miles in. The campsites off of Grade Valley road (Mount Pinos district) are nice in the summer time. Higher elevation pine forest. Lots of Chumash rock art sites in Los Padres.
Have fun!

"Exploring (Hiking) the Santa Barbara Backcountry" by Dennis R. Gagnon is a good guide for Los Padres.

I really love Joshua Tree for sunrise and sunset. During the summer there are not as many people. My friends and I got a whole campsite to ourselves last summer! On a cloudless night you can get some great views of the milky way, too.
I also really like Idyllwild in the San Jacinto forest. It is close to Joshua tree. There are some great spots for day hikes and weekend camping trips. I like the Deer Springs - Suicide Rock - Strawberry Junction trails for an easy day.

Yeah!!!! Los Padres is the shit! Lots of little secluded habitats out there. Great place to step out of your tent in the morning, and see foxes/boar scurrying away.

cyanophilus are you referring to upper or lower Los Padres? I ask because it say's you're from the Bay Area and I know that Los Padres has a southern and northern section. The northern section includes the Ventana wilderness and is supposed to be absolutely ridiculously gorgeous. Los Padres ntnl forest in the south is a lot more dry albeit spectacular in its own ways.

I like Apple White in Lytle Creek. The creek supports a rampant growth of blackberry which boast some damn tasty fruits, especially later in the summer. Also, if you like to shoot, there is a skeet range within a mile of the campground. There's also yellowpost sites nearby if you're up for getting off the beaten path. If you can find Lost Lake you'd be an incredibly happy camper
