Pasteurizing coir on stove, question
    #16188519 - 05/05/12 11:58 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I was looking for a good method of pasteurizing my CCV properly without partially sterilizing the substrate in the process.  I was particularly concerned about excessive temps on the outer edges of the substrate, seeing as I am pasteurizing 10-12 quarts of substrate in one bag.
I found this:

I do my pasterisation in spawn bags in a pot of water.

I first heat the water just to 60c and turn off. I check it till its at the same temp at the core of the bags and the water.

Once that happens I re heat till the water is 70c and turn off. I keep checking it till either the bags core gets to 60c, or the core and the water are the same temp. Usually though its at 60c by then at the core and we can start pastuerisation time. I set a timer for 60 minutes.

Once the core is at 60c, I reheat the water again to 70c and again turn off the heat.

I do this so that nothing gets over 70c, and also that the substrate at the outside of the bags doesn't stay at pasteurisation temps longer than 120 minutes, witch they might if you kept a constant heat trying to heat the center.

Once the 60 minutes is up I remove the bags from the water. That way the outsides cool preventing them from staying too hot for too long and that way the core of the bags will cool over the next hour so that they drop below pastuerisation temps.

Your exact set up will very, but I believe that you can use the same idea. Once you get your timing/system down its almost a set it and forget it. Yeah you have to check on it a few times, but it could be worse :super:

He is referring to pasteurizing straw+saw dust bags. I assume this applies to any substrate bag, correct?  As long as the temps stay consistent?

I pasteurize substrates in an oven at 170F for a few hours. Plastic grocery bags can be used at that temp to tie/hold in the moisture.

Right on. Thanks guys!
I've been having contam issues for the last couple years, and having moved on from LC to agar and G2G, I wanted to get my pasteurization done properly to rule out variables.  So I figured the stovetop method was my best bet.  I've tried a steam box, bucket tek, oven, and large_dose's and monstermitch's teks, and despite my efforts, I still end up with weird contams here and there, even after checking and smelling each jar that is spawned.
This is my first time with G2G and agar based cultures, so we will see. It's nice to get away from LC. I'll post some pics in a few weeks if I have time and the motivation.
