Storing spent coffee grounds
    #16188253 - 05/05/12 10:54 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Got a huge bag of spent coffee grounds from a local shop, I dried them out and now would like to keep them for a few months (no way I can use all this in less than that).
I figured, drying them and vacuum sealing them and throwing them in the freezer would work well.
Any experience on saving used grounds you can share with me?

Did you just walk in and ask em? I have been wanting some, but the only ones around here are major chain, I figured they would say its against corporate blah da blah da blah. I thought about PC'in half pints, but freezer space here is high dollar real estate.

if you get it totally dry you could store it airtight for years i suppose.

I store them in the freezer as is, no need to dry them.

Yeah. You can store it just like regular coffee when it is dry. Drying is the best preservation. It may get rancid after a few months, but the shrooms will not mind.

You could just freeze the wet or dry grounds in a ziplock bag. Vacuum would work too, but I doubt it is necessary.

You can definitely just walk in, some places like starbucks have a "grounds for gardens" thing where they give away their spent grounds for such purposes

Never done this myself as I only have a small fridge with ice box.
I always dry with slow heat in the oven. When fully dry, allow to cool and then jar them. Have some that have been stored like this for months that are still usable.

Be sure to sieve before jarring as the "grounds for gardens" from starbucks that I've obtained have contained whole pieces of coffee bean that have survived the grinding process unharmed, and it seems, are capable of surviving pasteurising. The only time I've suffered from an outbreak of trich, was from before I realised this.

I'm sure most places wouldn't mind giving away their spent coffee grounds. That is less waste that they have to take care of. Businesses have to pay for the waste that gets picked up and taken away so if you take it away for free then it could save them money.

I've driven past horse studs and stables that have signs out the front which offer free manure. It's similar to the situation above. They have copious amounts of waste that they have to clean up and get rid of each day. The horse studs and stables can save time and money if someone else wants to take it away to use for something else.

There's no harm in asking. You'll probably be doing them a favour and they can feel smug about saving the environment. If they ask what you want it for just say you want to put it on your garden if you don't want to mention mushrooms.
