it would help to know what is in that tray.

if its just verm, it probably wont fully colonize.

depending on how many times he has opened it to peak, it might not fully colonize, fruit it when you know that it is done growing.

peatmoss isn't supposed to fully colonize, its just supposed to be a casing layer.

coir is supposed to fully colonize.

2 cups of brf/verm will out perform 3 cups of straw, by far. or peatmoss, or whatever

If your using a non-nutritious casing layer (peat/verm) then it may not fully colonize. To help me understand, this is a tray thst has some BRF cakes buried under a casing. No Bulk substrate under there, right? Where the cakes whole, or crumbled? If there is no more nutritious substrate for the mycelium to overtake, then it might be safe to try and fruit the more colonized looking one. Next time maybe just dunk and roll the cakes before fruiting. I'm not sure, but casing them might have been a set back rather than a yield booster.

From what I have read, a fully colonized and cased tray may only show patches of mycelium in the valleys and low spots when they are ready. A lot of what I am reading lately though says that casing P. cubensis is not necessary at all.
