What is the best COIR to use for monotub?
#16185363 - 05/05/12 09:44 AM (12 years, 8 months ago) |

I have been doing a lot of reading on monotubs. I have been successful with BRF cakes and want to move to a more natural and greater yielding growth. I have seen lots of posts saying WBS/COIR is ideal for monotub. Just wondering if anyone has suggestions to the best COIR to be used...it would be great if you could include pics of the results also.

If you have a local pet store check there - they should have some in the reptile/small animal section. (It's often used for bedding.)

Local pet store for coir. Mr. Wilson, peat is not suitable for a substrate, though it is a common ingredient in casing mixes.

That's pretty much it. Just boil five quarts of water, then add to a 5 gallon bucket with 1 brick of coir and 2 quarts of verm in it. Then, put the lid on the bucket and DON'T open it until it is completely cool, I let mine sit over night.
After that, just mix your spawn and the substrate together in your monotub, leaving a top layer of only substrate to act as a contaminate barrier.

Forgot to mention, make sure to check your coir, some has trich added. If it's used for gardening there's a possibility it will, since it's used as a bio-agent.

I don't have a tek for the GH build, no. I've got a link to my monotub tek (same recipe as my GH trays) & a link for the cig butt grow.
I use Damion5050's Elementary Coir tek for my coir+verm prep.

Mr. Wilson - I'm not speaking from personal experience, but since nobody has answered you - I hear this is not the stuff you want. Coco husk has big chunks in it, and you want coco coir - just the fibers.
I just read a post last night where someone said they used coco husk and will never use it again.

Off topic and smart-alecky, but,
I read the thread title, and I think "coconut coir, duh!"

Yeah, I know. That's why I put the disclaimer in my post.
I've never purchased coir that didn't work. Every brand I've ever used worked fine.

Buy local. Rye grain is available at every health food store in the world, and many ordinary supermarkets.

Look around. A place like that is more likely to have whole rye grain than a big-city store.

Don't go out of your way for rye, it's really not worth it. It's a little easier than WBS and a little more uniform, the performance is the same though.
WBS is a lot cheaper than most rye and widely available.

^^^true, but rye really is the best, and if you find the right source it's about $15 for 50 lbs. (But I use WBS, 20lbs for $6)

Doc_T
I could never find that kind of price anywhere. I could get it at local health food stores for 1.60/pound or for the same price on the Internet including shipping. I honestly wished I had started using WBS a long time ago, it would've saved me a bunch of cash.

I haven't found it locally at that price (yet), but I did in another state. Per pound, you get more jars of spawn out of rye than you do WBS so it actually is cheaper than it might seem.
Easier to get right the first time too, so I recommend it for grain newbs even if they have to pay a lot more. Once they master using rye then wbs or other grains are easier too.

I get 55 lbs of rye for 18 vs. 20 lbs. of WBS for 8...do the math. Rye is cheaper.

Rye is definitely NOT available at every health food store. Where I live I checked every single Whole Foods, and they no longer carry it. Luckily I eventually did find it at a farm around 40 miles away for only 40 cents a pound.
I originally bought Burpee coco coir, but since I haven't heard anybody say they have used it successfully, I decided to get some Eco Earth today. Better safe than sorry. I had emailed Burpee asking if there was trich in it, but they took a long time to reply. I didn't see it till after I got back from the pet store. But the reply said that there is no trich in the Burpee coir. So now I just have extra I guess.
