Tips on incubating a coco coir casing *Updated!*
    #1602126 - 06/02/03 04:56 PM (20 years, 9 months ago)

Hey,

I made my first casing yesterday using the 60/40 coco coir tek and 2 fully colonized BRF cakes. It's now sitting in my incubator and I have good hopes everything will go well.

I was wondering, how do we make a second flush? Do I just pick the first one and let it sit in the terrarium and wait for the other one or do I have to add another casing layer, incubate and fruit again?

lemme know ...

.fs.

spray water on the side of the casing container so water can run down to the bottom. It will drink it up there.

Thanks Zwieback and SBT. I'll do that.

Another question, i'm curious about it.

I'm still new to this. So far, I fruited something like 5 or 6 cakes following the PF tek and I wasn't satisfied with the yields, that's why I'm trying a casing right now.

My casing aluminium pan is about 14 inches by 5 and two half pints jars were used in this one. How much grams should I expect? I know it's a stupid question since so many factors are involved but I would be happy with 10 dried grams. Will I make it?

Depends like you said...

Whats the substrate depth and the casing depth?

I tried to follow the official tek on shroomery. I put half inch of wet vermiculite in the bottom. Then I crumbled 2 cakes over it. I realized that I crumbled the cakes in relatively big clusters (biggers than the ones showed in the pictures tek). I guess the crumbled cakes layer is about 2 inches thick. I add around 1 or 1 1/2 inches of 60/40 coco coir/verm layer on top of that.

That's about it.

Like mentioned, everything is sitting in a 14" by 5" alluminium pan.

I really hope it's gonna work well. I was so pissed of seeing some nice pictures of casings with 50 big shrooms growing out of that while I was messing with my little cakes with no more than 2 or 3 shrooms at a time....!!

Well. Sorry to burst your bubble but the casing layer may be too thick. On my first casing I also made the same mistake. In the end, my casing slightly overlayed and never really colonized the casing later. Just make a thinner one next time. Currently I have about the same thing you have going...except my casing layer is about 1/4 th of an inch. I just sprinkled a light layer on it.

You still have hope though. Just make everything else is fine. Dont mess with the casing layer though, this will jsut mess up the myc and stall it.

i agree with zwie-your casing depth is too thick. what the foaf did on his first casing was crumble with large pieces (loonie sixed around) and filled in everything till you just could barely see the sub underneath-it gave good results and colonized quickly with a 2 inch substrate. if you just cased yours in the last couple days then you can tilt it or lightly scrape (scrapin isnt a bad thing-look into deep scratching) all the uncolonized casing layer off the sub, then incubate till you see fit and fruit.

Scraping can be good but try not to if it is not mandatory.

The reason that one scrapes their casing layer is to induce new growth of myc because of overlay...hardened myc layer on the top. This happened to me once, overlay, and I panicked and tried to do everything possible for it, but it only did more harm.

If you scratch it when it is not needed this will cause the myc to stall and try to recooperate from the un needed scratching. Only do it when you are sure its overlay.

But its probably a good idea if you tilt it and let some of that casing tumble out.

Oh I really have a too thick layer? Bah, that was my first mistake I guess. I will let it sit and see what happens.

the good news is that I still have 4 fully colonized BRF cakes waiting. I decided to keep em in the jars, make my first casing and learn from it before casing everything at the same time and risking a major failure with all my casings.

Thanks for the hints. I was reading a tek on the shroomery (not really a tek, more a quote from the growing mushrooms book) that was saying that a casing layer should be no less than 1 inch thick and no more than 2 inch. Most of the teks here are also saying that the casing layer should be around 1/4 of the substrate layer. I was all messed up with this and just put 1 or 1 1/2 inch on top and hope for best.

I'll make another casing with 3/4 inch layer.

you only really need to just cover the substrate with your casing layer...1/2 inch is WAY too much....i suggest maybe taking a fork and raking some of the casing layer off...then re misting

I think you misread. He has a 1.5 inch layer of casing. 1/2 inch is just about right, it just barely covers the substrate.

Well, I made it. I scrapped most of the coco coir layer and let something like 1/2 or 3/4 inch layer on top. I didn't see any mycellium growth while scrapping (it was incubating since 3 or 4 days).

I'll let you know what happens ...

thanks.

Here's an update.

After scrapping most of the casing layer and leaving somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 inches of coco coir /verm , I have now 3 little mycellium patches that is colonizing on the surface (they are around big as dimes).

What should I do now? I was following a tek that says to put in the terrarium as soon as you see some mycellium on top of casing and I also remember people telling it's better to cover the patches, wait a couple more days and then put in terrarium.

What are the suggestions?! I also wonder if I must use sterilized casing mix for patching or if at this point it doesn't really matter.

Thanks, once again, for your precious help.

Some cultivators barely cover the faster areas of colonized casing to allow the rest of it to catch up for amore even pinset and flush.AFOAF puts his casings directly into his fruiting chamber immediately after casing them with no problems,I've never really understood why people leave the casing under foil to colonize before fruiting,it seems to me this would cause more contams as it isn't being fanned while its under there.
Anyway, yes, you may put it in the fruiting chamber. You can cover up the faster areas of colonization if you like also.
You may also rehydrate the casing after the first flush with water and H2o2,AFOAF just pours water in it,lets it sit an hour or so ,then drains off the excess water.Peace.
