Question on Recipes ----
    #16184497 - 05/05/12 12:58 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I came across a post by Ryche Hawk that's kinda out-dated, but I wanted to know if this recipe is still being used, or if there's any legitimate benefits to it... He was talking about using crushed oyster shells and also calcium carbonate as part of a casing layer. Is this method / recipe still being used, and do these ingredients have any noticeable effects on the growth / size of the harvest? If so, let's say I was preparing a monotub and I was using Damion's coir tek - could I throw the oyster shell and calcium carbonate inside the bucket along with the coir, verm, and gypsum? Does the oyster shell need to be sterilized? and will throwing it in the bucket per Damino's coir tek sterilize the oyster shell if need be?

Thanks guys

Oyster shells provide calcium carbonate in sort of a slow release form.  Too slow.  Better to use powdered calcium carbonate or agricultural lime.

The point of the calcium carbonate is to raise the pH of the casing layer.  The higher pH helps prevent mold from growing.

DO NOT mix it in with your cubensis subtrate.  it will slow things down.  use it in your casing layer only,  if you even feel the need for a casing layer.

Use GYPSUM in your subtrates.
