Did you know? No war has been fought where both countries had a Mcdonalds, yet (2003).

I heard about it, but you're wrong: USA hasn't fought a war with a country that has McDonalds yet.

I didn't write this, but I remembered it from an article on another site:

The validity of this statement seems to depend on the accepted definition of "war." The conflicts listed in the previous writeups to refute it [The previous writeups are not there any more, so I don't know what wars were being referred to] are (were) insignificant on a global scale. Using a convenient analogy to earthquakes, if World War II were an 8 on the Richter Scale, causing widespread destruction, the battle over the Falklands wouldn't register much greater than a 4, barely noticed a few miles from its epicenter.

I think the intended point of the original article was that the globalization of American culture has created enough cultural similarity among its participants (or victims, depending on how you view it) that a catastrophic World War III becomes a virtual impossibility. I doubt it's a sense of brotherhood or international goodwill, though. Inducing nothing more than a lazy, sluggish hybrid of decadence and apathy, consumerism seems to drain the fighting spirit out of people.

Again, this can be good or bad, depending on individual perspective. The unread (at least they aren't unwashed anymore!) masses of McDonald's-eating cable TV-watching Wal-Mart-shopping American consumers can't be stirred to the intense hatred and self-sacrifice necessary for a large-scale war effort. On the other hand, they're indifferent to serious environmental issues that could leave the planet virtually uninhabitable for their great-grandchildren.

If two countries with McDonald's, and the likely coincident nukes, ever had a real war, the results would be devastating beyond anything in recorded history. I doubt that will ever happen. Politicians will just blather on with idle threats, secure in the knowledge that their citizens lack the force of will to make a concerted effort toward anything, creative or destructive.

If current trends continue, the death of civilization will be a slow one. Overpopulation? Ozone? Greenhouse effect? Most likely a combination of these and many others. Thanks in part to McDonald's and its kin, humanity will indeed go gentle into that good night.

#edit# oh yeah, and apparently the original statement "is the creation of New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman and is explored in his book The Lexus and the Olive Tree: Understanding Globalization"

--------------------
The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.

Insert an "I think" mentally in front of eveything I say that seems sketchy, because I certainly don't KNOW much. Also; feel free to yell at me.
