What's it called when you put 1/2" of coir/verm on top of tub? Casing?

Okay, so I've read numerous times that cubes do not benefit from casing. So, question is, is the 1/2" of coir/verm that people normally frost the top of their monotubs with considered a casing? I ask because for my latest tub, which is on day 12 of consolidation, I didn't use the frosting layer. I just mixed it all together. Did I dun goof? It all looks fine. I was just wondering what the general consensus here was.

People put a layer of substrate on top to help prevent contams from getting directly onto the mycelium. A casing layer wouldn't have nutritional value, and would just be used to keep RH up. As you said though, cubes don't necessarily need a casing layer.

Pretty sure it's not a casing he is talking about. And he asked if he dun goofed, not if he did good.

1/2 in on top has to be a casing layer couldnt be anything else there are people who spawn to balk then cover up with more substrate but not a 1/2in

Technically not a casing layer. I'll leave the proof as an exercise for the students.
I think of coir as "self-casing". I use that top layer (1/4" to 1/2") and recommend others do as well.

ive never went up to a 1/2in 1/4in sound about right and i do it on all my bulk tubs no matter what im using i only do this to even everything out seems to make a nicer pinset i just then 1/2in would take awhile to colonize
