Substrates! PLEASE HELP!
    #16180546 - 05/04/12 06:24 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I was wondering if i could make a substrate for BRF cakes instead of just verm and BRF, having 31% BRF 31% coir 33% BRF  5% worm castings.....
... Input anyone?

They would be prepared by putting the verm and BRF together like normal
and then after they were mixed adding the coir and castings and mixing again, and then just following the PFTEK...

Thanks in Advanced!

On the 5% worm castings part, I do not have enough knowledge but I recall 4% of gypsum being used so 5% might be ideal.

Coir holds moisture just fine and it is also resistant to contamination though it is celluse and lignin based so not the ideal food for cubes, you may want to lower the percentage.

Otherwise your substrate set-up looks fine to me but I am not an expert.

Don't put castings in your mix. When I was new to this, I tried a few things, castings included, and the jars wouldn't colonize. Too dense, gooey maybe. But mostly importantly, castings need to be properly pasteurized, and the brf tek won't do that for you.

Lifted, maybe the castings were too hot in nutrients and killed the spores? What do you think? Could it be possible?

its the pf tek
and yes it will properly pasteurize worm castings
only needs to hit 170 degrees to pasteurize
just using a regular pot to steam sterilize it will hit 212 degrees

Sterilization and pasteurization are two different things.
Pasteurization is a specific process involving specific temperatures and specific times.
You're full of misinformation this morning, you should have some coffee or something.

OP, make your cakes with brf and verm. Maybe add a teaspoon of gypsum if you're feeling adventurous.

Word!

If you are feeling adventurous and/or wanting to start dabbling in bulk grows; simply spawn some crumbled-up cakes to some hydrated coconut coir

Ok so i said fuck the worm castings, and i guess i could go buy verm tomomorow but its far far away and a pain in the ass... btw some backround info

I have 10 1pint jars and am going to be doing the hippie3 neglect tek...
So i far i have 800 ML of BRF(80 each) and 2000 ML of Verm (200 each) i was planning on mixing in 800ml of coir... would it really be that bad or should i spend 2 hrs commuting just for 1 more liter of verm...

Vermiculite and coir are two completly different products intended for totally different purposes. You can not substitute one for the other. And no, I would not commute 2 hours for 1 liter of Verm. However, knowing that I would have to commute for 2 hours to buy some, I would not just buy one liter.

If I had to change anything, I would try Whole Grain Rice to substitute the BRF/Verm Mix. I have seen a few teks listed on these forums for using Whole Brown Rice and it does not require mixing in Vermiculite, though I believe you still need a small anti-contamination layer of verm on top.

Grind your whole grain (what kind?) to flour, you can use that like the brf.
Personally, I don't think you should change anything until you've done it right at least once.
But a change of flour is relatively innocuous. I'd pressure cook rather than steam sterilizing though.
