Gypsum Supplement for Wheat Substrate

In some techniques and videos I've seen cultivators adding gypsum to the substrate. I wanted to try the same but I didn't do any controlled experiments doing so.
Today while I was checking the jars I noticed that the jars I forgot to add gypsum started to colonize in three days and the jars with gypsum took for days and only one colonized.
I am adding 1 spoonful of gypsum (around 15ml) to 2 litres of dry wheat while soaking them and re adding the same amount while boiling them. Since I could not find powdered gypsum I've used plaster of paris (powdered).
Strains Used: B+, Eq, Ostrateus
Is it my luck? Another factor? Or plainly gypsum is bad for the jars?

No, gypsum is not bad for grains but adding plaster of paris to the soak or boil water is very bad.
If you insist on using plaster of paris, make it into a paste first, let it dry and solidify, and then grind it back to powder to use as gypsum. RR

Thanks Rabbit for pointing out the part I did wrong! I'll try the paste & solidify & grind method this time!

I just bought a 12x12" piece of drywall from Ace Hardware and used the fine side of a cheese grater to powder it up. To filter out the bits of paper from the shredded drywall I just sifted it through a fine metal strainer, though I suspect the minute amount of shredded paper wouldn't pose a problem in the substrate mix.

Sounds like a plan, this time I will experiment so I can add grinded drywall into the variables. I'll try solidified and powdered plaster of paris and non-treated wheat and if I can find, powdered drywall as well. I'll post results as I get them. Thanks for the advice.

Or, go to an agricultural supply and get a bag of gypsum. RR

It is not like I don't but I can't... I've checked for gypsum, vermiculite and perlite through the whole city but I've failed to find any. I've only seen gypsum in an agriculture festival but I didn't buy it since it wasn't in powder form.
It is funny, people do not sell mason jars in here as well...
Thanks for the suggestion though.
