Bulk Pinning question/technique critique

Its only been a week, but I am only seeing side pins on two bulk tubs. Just looking for some advice for better pin sets/methods that have worked for experienced bulk growers.
Also, I believe my tubs are slightly under colonized, a mistake which I do not intend to repeat.

Below the middle photo I have a humidifier and bucket with air stones. A computer fan is used to circulate the air. The lights are on a 10 on 14 off cycle.
The temp is a bit high, which is a constant battle for my setup, as I live in a warmer climate, despite the 74 degree house temperature. My gf wont let me put it any lower, lest I face "dire consequences". That said, I am open to innovative solutions to this problem. I have been reduced to filling the humidifier with ice.
Thank you all.

Not covering the sides of your tub is the reason for the side pinning.

Yep. Wrap those tubs in gorilla tape on the bottom and sides as deep as your substrate and you wont have that problem.
Also, have you considered a small window AC unit to lower the temp in your mushroom room?

It was my understanding that pinning isn't entirely light related; Pinning was more caused by FAE and high humidity. If light were the reason for side pins, why is there no pinning on the top side of the tubs?
My understanding to side pinning is that they are creating micro-climates as the myc colonized the bulk substrate and pulls pulls it from the sides of the tub, the humidity there is kept at 100% due to the poor air flow.

I hadn't considered it, though they do look cheap enough to handle it. I will be looking into that further.

Higher heat causes hollower stems if you're worried about how they turn out, also strain has a little factor but it's mostly a combination of heat and substrate quality. I try to keep Tape up the sides for sure and that will prevent side pinning. Seventy degrees is usually a good temperature I've found for optimum fruit growth as it's generally more hot in the substrate. I've heard of a lot of people having success in even lower temperatures with nice fruits.

If you have a nutritious substrate, growth will be slower and stems heavier. If you have a substrate like straw, growth will be very fast, and often hollow stems form. The same thing happens with higher than normal temps. Growth speeds up, therefore hollow stems are more common.
The speed of growth can also have genetic variations, thus a multispore grow with several strains might have some hollow and some solid stems in the same substrate. RR

Your understanding is correct. I was just about to type that if it were light, the tops would be covered in pins too. You beat me to it.

A good way to prevent side pinning is to place a plastic trash bag inside the tote and then fill it with the substrate. This way, the bag attaches to the substrate and shrinks with it, eliminating that air space around the edges which stimulates side pinning. RR

Ah, I have seen some grows with that done, was never sure of the reason. Solid advice. Thanks, as always, RR.

Interesting indeed. The mushrooms, at all stages, speak to us so much. It helps loads when we better understand their language.

There seriously needs to be a decent wikipedia-esque page. That would be a true asset to the community.
