A quick question on PC'ing LC jars
    #16177075 - 05/03/12 03:05 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Under normal circumstances, I would let the PC'd jars I just did cool overnight in the PC for tomorrow's inoculation. However, I'd like to do some agar petris tonight as well, if I can.

Is it bad to remove the jars a few hours later, once the PC had dropped to standard pressure and let them cool elsewhere? Or, should I just wait and do the agar in the morning?

Thanks for the help.

You'll be fine to let it cool for a few hours then remove the weight & do an agar run.
Just make sure to slowly lift off the toggle weight to allow pressure to escape slowly.

That's what I was hoping for. I'm using a Presto, which in addition to the toggle, has a 'button' in the handle that pops up at pressure to secure it so you can't open the PC under pressure. Once that button drops, air is being drawn in as the contents cool. So,, I imagine this would be the same if I removed the jars while still warm. I have micropore tape over the venting holes on the jars.

Just be sure to slowly vent the pressure from inside the PC.
I just did it the other day w/ my AA930 for some sterile water.
I just waited 30-60 minutes after it hit zero, then ever so gently, lifted the toggle weight ever so slightly.
I held it venting a very small amount of pressure for a few minutes until it no longer vented any pressure.
Then I took off the weight entirely, & opened the PC.
