First Monotub Grow, Long-time Lurker
    #16176372 - 05/03/12 12:05 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hey guys,

So I've been lurking around the forums off and on for a couple years, the information on this site is (even if a bit difficult to sift through sometimes) extremely comprehensive and useful. I tried a PF grow once and got some results from that, but I want more. So summer is coming up, and I'm about to do a bulk grow. I've ordered some spores already and I'm planning on doing a version of Damions Coir Tek, here's the breakdown.

  • Knock some LC with the spore syringe (using 4% karo and constructing a GE plastic filter lid with RTV injection port).

  • Use LC to knock up some Spawn Bags of WBS (pre-sealed w/ filter patch). Also I was thinking of adding a small % H2O2 and gypsum when soaking the Bird Seed.

  • Pasteurize some spent coffee and add it to Damions tek w/ the Coir & Verm after I've let the coir/verm soak in the boiling water.

  • Use a ~60quart Monotub (still looking for a proper tub to buy) with (4) 1.5" holes cut using a hole saw at sub layer (wasn't planning on casing, but open for suggestion)  and (2) 2" holes a few inches from the top of the tub.

  • Apply trash can liner, cut to sub height.

  • Lay down 2.5" of sub, crumble WBS over it, and then add a top layer. With the holes covered with tape wait for it colonize.

  • Strip tape, apply Poly-fil and wait.

Did I miss anything? Thanks for taking the time to read :mushroom2:
All comments welcome, suggestions on spawn/sub ratios and sterile procedures more than welcome.

Looks like a good plan to me.  It's really pretty easy once you have your spawn ready and your bulk substrate prepared.

I've got a smaller monotub going right now, two holes at substrate level and four holes near the top.  I didn't used a garbage bag liner because they're a pain to me, so I just used black duct tape to line the outside bottom of the tub.

Yup, just mix your spawn and bulk up however you want.  I usually lay down a layer of bulk, then a layer of seed and kind of mix it around just a bit, then keep doing that until I'm at the top.  My top layer is usually mostly substrate with sparse amounts of grain within.  I figure the grain would dry out faster than the bulk.  After a few days the mycelium burst up through it.  After you mix the spawn and bulk, tape your holes (I usually just leave the bottom holes untaped while mixing spawn/bulk).

Place the tub wherever you want it to colonize.  I've got mine in a closet at the moment and it's doing really well.  I open the closet some during the day to let a bit of light in.  It'll colonize in the dark or in the light, or a mix is nice.

I'll only apply the polyfill after the whole thing is colonized and has consolidated.  You don't want FAE until it's completely ready to fruit.  So after it's 100% colonized on top, let it set for about 3 more days to ensure all available nutrients are being colonized.  Then take tape off, stuff with polyfill and set out to fruit.

Easy peasy

If I were doing a larger monotub, like you, I would use more holes at the substrate level.  So I'd probably have four holes at the bottom and four at the top.  I'd stuff the bottom holes slightly tighter than the top, but still not so tight as to prevent some airflow.  If your bulk is prepared right the humidity will remain high and you shouldn't have to open up the top until they're ready to pick.  If you notice it looking on the dry side you can open it up to mist and fan.

Also, I've heard of people opening up the top as soon as they sit it out to fruit to give it a nice fan.  I imagine because the sudden rush of fresh air would be an immediate pinning trigger.  It's whatever you wanna do.

Good luck!

Just some advice from experience,

-I've found GLCs to be much more useful that sugar LCs, especially since you can see any contams growing

-You can forget the H202 during the soak, it will be detrimental.  Any contams will be killed during PC anyways

-I've also found that mixing the sub and spawn together in the tub, and then adding a small frosting layer of substrate on top, provides the best results for me

GL on your grow

Cool, thanks for the replies folks. I'm gonna look into GLC, I'm assuming that stands for Grain Liquid Culture. When it comes to initiate fruiting I've heard some people use a fan. Is that absolutely necessary? Has anyone ever done like a Pepsi challenge with and without a fan?
