Question About Cakes.....
    #1617595 - 06/08/03 02:52 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Everytime my friend has grown using the cake method the fruits only grow in one spot on the cakes...... it has always just been 3-5 fruits growing in one big clump and absolutely nothing growing anywhere else on the cake..... Is this normal? If not what might be the cause and a possible solution to my friend's problem?

yes its very normal. the 'clump' of mushrooms tend to grow from areas where moisture gathers, such as uncolonized vermiculite. SO, a good solution is to cover the entire cake with verm like this:

the verm 'catches' moisture, and consequently, mushrooms grow all over the cake.

guy: you using dry or wet verm? The grey squirrel double end cased his cakes, and they are doing much better than his plain fist cake did (which has been double end cased after a shitty first flush)

He is going to try rolling the whole cake in verm after these cakes flush

So the fruits will still grow normally out of the verm if you cover them like that after full colonization?

Also, another question..... all of my friends fruits seem to have a lot of mycelium growing on them towards the base.... is this a problem? or is this also relatively normal?

roll the cakes in moist (not saturated), sterile verm right after dunking. if the cakes dont need to be dunked, mist them then roll in verm.

it seems like the extra verm = more moisture which increases the amount of fluffy white mycelium, which then pins all over the cake like a casing surface.

mycelium growing on the stem base is normal.
