Spawn bag colonization Shelf life
    #16175090 - 05/03/12 01:56 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hey all, was wondering your guys' opinion on this matter:

Pretend you had some spawn bags, but no place to fruit them until the next month. Some are at 100%, some are close.
There's a cool basement to store them in, it's not quite refrigerator cold, but it's chilly down there.

Would the one's that are at 100% store better? No risk of contam?

Or would the one's that are at about 90% store better, with uncolonized grain potentially contamming, yet the myc "knowing" it's not colonized, staying "fresh" (not unlike agar slants).

I'm pretty sure that either way, I'd be fine. I've left spawn in room temperature for a month or two before using it, and it still was fine.

I was just wondering what you guys thought would be the "optimal" method of storing spawn. Thanks all

I'd let them finish colonizing if I was going to store them for a month or better. I would never store uncolonized spawn bags just sounds risky, I think you'd run into troubles getting them to finish. I have stored colonized bags for multiple months though with no problem.

I would let them fully colonize before storing but I'm not so sure a chilly basement or cellar is going to work. I would think a refrigerator would be more reasonable IMO

Spawn bags (or two) take up too much space in a fridge...
It's the basement storage to a building, it's pretty cold down there. Better than room temp, anyway.

Yeah no doubt on them taking up fridge space, if you feel like the basement or whatever is cool enough then go for it

That's a kickass idea right there man. As long as you kept the bags off the ice

I would just leave them where they are. A month is no big deal for them to sit colonized. They will just consolidate and will work very well.

Even if they start to pin invirto towards the very end you can pick them off and mix them in with substrate. They do very well.

Damn. I was under the impression that spawn which has set and consolidated wouldnt colonize you bulk quite as vigorously as it would right after it colonized your spawn 100% . So you haven't noticed slower colonizing times between the 2 methods?

Nope in fact I find older grain to be really strong and much faster.

If its really old of course its not going to be as healthy.

I've had spawn sit in room temp for 2 months, and spawned it, and there was no noticeable difference, but I use a high spawn ratio...

so the consensus is that it is better stored at 100%, rather than 90% like an agar slant? I know it is not really comparable as there is so much more of a contam risk with a spawnbag rather than a slant, but I was thinking about the principle, not so much the application in real life...
