How to survive in the Wilderness
    #16173327 - 05/02/12 08:04 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

So eventually a life goal for me would be to pack everything I need on my back and head out into the wild. I'm sure a lot of people have this goal/dream but I am serious about it and want to make it happen sometime. I'm about to leave for basic training for the army and I'm sure that will help me a ton in the long run but for now what will I essentially need to know and how possible is it to actually live forever with nothing in the woods?

The main things you would need to know are:
- Building a shelter
- Making a fire
- Finding water
- Finding food
- Signaling for help
- Navigation
- Basic wilderness first aid
- Predicting the weather

Now can this really be an accomplished goal of someone?
Is this even legal to do?
There has to be people currently doing this right?

Thoughts, opinions, comments, ideas???

:peace::heart:

Believe it or not it is illegal. We're doin this though. The only way we would probably get busted is for a cop looking for marijuana fields in choppers

Yeah I believe you would have to be living on and off of your own land for it to be legal but if you were in the middle of the woods in Alaska or Canada or something would it really be that hard to stay hidden

I guess the proper term would be a Survivalist Expert

I'm so serious about this though it's been a life long goal for as long as I can remember.

my dream too. but mostly because i like isolation, well actually just dont like people. with hunting, trapping regulations and fishing regulations, i mean i guess if you hunt and fish in season and pay for the tags and what not. better know your stuff and keep a sharp quality axe or two. i suggest gransfors and bruks from sweden. they do it right. would you bring a gun, or use a bow only? or make a bow? without hunting and trapping being legal you wouldnt make it long, for many reasons.

you didnt think of an axe? that is by far the most important thing you will need. what kind of knife do you have or are you looking at? spyderco is my favorite brand. that is also very important, steel type, and design matter when its life or death. considering a gun, you could bring a 22. with a couple thousand rounds easy, but the gun will deteriorate in the wilderness. you wouldnt be able to keep it dry, oiled, or clean.

what would you do for clean drinking water? almost all lakes and rivers have some toxic material in them.

I was talking about the gun not the axe

I don't have anything or plan to do this soon. Far in my future I plan to after my military life and so on...

Just thought I would spark up a chat about it in here and see what others have to say but there is not a lot of traffic in the Great Outdoors section

i did all of this in the past but was missing one critical element which was stone tool making. now i'm a true mountain man. my mother even finally said i'm one.

i saw that movie recently and loved it. i must have seen it as a child too because i remember certain scenes vaguely. i love his huckleberry scoop/rake! native peoples made those too. i'll be travelling to my mines exactly one week from now. i can barely contain myself! i haven't dug anything since fluorite in february with a broken rib, so it's like being reborn.

Basic training is going to be more about brain washing you for your future missions than teaching you how to survive on your own. You will learn some basic survival, but it will not be how to sustain life on your own in the wilderness. Besides that... there really isn't that much wild, wild, wilderness left. If it's your dream then I encourage you to pursue it. But I hope you have money. Cause you won't last long.

I spend 5 days alone in the mountains every two weeks, I plan to work up to 12 days, but I see no reason to stay out longer than that. It's nice to hit a hot tub, order a pizza, and restock on supplies. I use a Katadyn filter and a SteriPen for water. Something starts to happen to my perception after day 3... everyone should go solo once in a while. I've stashed clothes and camp supplies in the canyons, so I can bring in more food. It's amazing how much food I eat while hiking. Two pounds per day, including tea and sugar. No reason to rough it, we've done that for a million years. I say enjoy the best of both worlds. Good luck on your trip, PC.

I really want to do this eventually but I got a lot on my plate for my future. It was just an idea I've always had in my head

some into the wild type shit

I know bootcamp will not prepare me but it will help that is for damn sure. I hope to take some classes or training in some sort of survival field while in the military though

id say the one thing that youre probably not prepared for is the isolation. no people around. you might just lose it.

but one thing i suggest is learning first aid. simple antibiotics that are given to fish can easily be bought and taken by humans. works just the same.

hows it any different then being homeless? I know of this lil asian village of squaters that live near this railroad line, but I think they have permission from the people who own the land. I've thought about this too, only thing you'd really have to worry bout is hunters or similar things.

wilderness survivalists respect the land for all it's worth while homeless campers will ignore food growing in front of their face and leave trash everywhere, which seems to make them not as smart as a bear or raccoon.
