Suggestions for coir pasteurization?

I'm having difficulty decided on the method to use. My sub will be coir, verm, and a little gypsum.
I'm inclined to use the bucket tek. I have a 5 gallon home depot bucket.
The thing is, I'm not sure if I fully trust this technique. I've heard that it has a very high success rate, but also that it is highly criticized by RR.
I know one thing, and that is that I want to do this RIGHT and avoid failure at all costs.
What do you guys suggest?

dude. go bucket tek. trust me, and many others. With the ingredients you listed, bucket tek kicks ass

I use a version of the bucket tek. Works ok usually.
What I recommend is that you do a real pasteurization like RR says. It's best for any substrate and required for anything more advanced than what you are using.

That's not technically pasteurization, which requires that the temp stay in a specified range for a specified period of time. Like I said, I do it about like that. But I don't recommend others do that, do a real pasteurization as a separate step.

I've recently read RR recommend a temp of 140F, over the 170F . The bucket tek will get you to 170F, and then drop to 140F and lower eventually.

I tried real pasteurization last time, and had a lot of difficulty thoroughly and evenly heating the substrate, which is why I'm considering the bucket tek. Part of the reason was that I simply didn't have a large enough pot, and stirring became difficult. What if I heated my substrate to 160f, left for 1 hour, and then poured it into the bucket to cool down?
Doc_T, you and I are from the same state. I've been curious for some time now... have you noticed any differences with colonization times in this area? My jars always take 5-6 weeks to finish, and I've speculated that it has something to do with the high elevation. Have you noticed anything?

I've had nothing but success following Damion's bucket tek, and I use the same ingredients you listed - coir, verm, and bout a half cup of gypsum.
Good luck

Bucket tek is fine. I've used with success many times. Coir is notoriously preventative to contamination, which makes the success ratio so high.

5-6 days with g2g transfer of a good clone culture. Humidity issues are my main stumbling block, that's how I ended up inventing the hybrid MSG tub.

Right. But what it doesn't do is get you to 140-160F no more no less and maintain that for a full hour no more no less.
Bucket tek works ok. It's not pasteurization.

Right. But what it doesn't do is get you to 140-160F no more no less and maintain that for a full hour no more no less.
Oh, my bad. I thought that it did maintain that range for the correct time. I took some readings, and they indicated such. Thanks for correction Doc.

It's a common misunderstanding. Pasteurization is a specific process, not just heat-and-wait.

This is the link with the info I was referencing : http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/5202899#5202899
Particularly, :

RogerRabbit said: In general, I've found contaminants are less when a lower pasteurization temp is used. At 140F, the fungi spores and mycelium are killed off, but the beneficial bacteria survive. If the center of your substrate can be at 140F for one hour, you're good to go. RR
I realize this is a six year old thread, so... Calling all RR's
oh there you are man...
Can I ask you to please chime in with your thoughts on this bucket tek that we all use?

If using the "Bucket Tek"... I would suggest using no less than 400g coir, or there will not be sufficient heat... And no more than 800g coir, as it becomes a pain to mix up well...
Furthermore; thoroughly breaking up the compressed coir ahead of time, before adding the hot water, makes a dramatic difference... In my experience...

Absolutely agreed. I never have dry chunks after doing this.

Me too, I flake pieces off the side of the big block with a short paring knife.
But look at it like this- if we were actually pasteurizing with the bucket tek, it would work for manure, coffee, or straw. These materials require proper pasteurization, and bucket prepping won't do the job. Therefore, it's not pasteurization. It's ok for coir/verm/gypsum but not for other substrates because it's not pasteurization.
I stand by my recommendation- proper pasteurization is "Best Practice" for all substrates.

Bucket Tek FTW. Especially for your planned substrate.
For coffee, dry it out completely for storage and it wont contam. Throw dry coffee in bucket with coir...I have experienced no issues.
