White Caps

I've been storing some picked shrooms in my freezer for two weeks. This may have a been a bad mistake, but I 'm inexperienced. About half the caps have turned, at least part, white. The skin is very very thin, and kind of fuzzy although its hard to tell, and I can't tell if its the skin or something growing out of the skin. I'm not sure about the danger of eating these shrooms and thought I would consult the board. Any information you coujld give me would be great.

if they were fresh picked... and allowed to sit without drying. mycelium could have grown from the stems... but on the cap i dont know. white on frozen things to my knowledge is freezer burn. ive never heard of anyone putting their mush in the freezer... much less white stuff on the caps. MAIA might know, but if you could get some pics and post them up. dont eat them until your sure you know what you got... but to me it sounds like freezer burn... how were the shrooms before you put them in? how long did you leave them in? did you let them sit in a moist place for a long time without being dryed?

yeah, its always a bad idea to freeze fresh mushrooms.

seeing as though most contams (if not all) can not thrive in freezing temps, i doubt that they could have developed contamination while in the freezer and it takes a while for freezer burn to set in, so i would guess that its just a normal reaction to being frozen, unless they were contamd b4 you put em in there.

in the future, always dry out mush b4 putting it into storage, and even for dry mush, an air-tight jar the fridge (not freezer) is the best way.

considering they are about 97% water its probably just frozen water on the outside....anyone for a mushroomsicle?? :grin:

The only way i found to consume mushrooms when frozen is blending and making a milkshake, adding chocolate or any other flavour makes it great, effects are fast.
Defreezing is a bad idea since the whole stuff will turn into mush.
