Did I unpasteurize my poo?
    #16165828 - 05/01/12 01:46 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

hi, i'm brand new to the forum. i'm trying my first grow using the hydro invitro poo bag tek. i already have a few jars inoculated with golden teacher and are coming along nicely.

now i have a heap of aged composted horse dung available to me that ive decided to use.  a friend of mine told me i should get the poo up to about 130-140 F degrees in the oven to kill all the insect eggs and unwanted contaminates.

I took his advice and put the poo in an oven bag and got it up to 160 but i figured that was no big deal.  i let it dry outside and then i bagged it up.  i know theres many things wrong with this (i may have introduced more contams...i should have just kept it sealed in the bag after the oven treatment).  when i check on the poo a few days later after it had been in the bag at room temperature the poo seemed fresh...it smelt like horse dung unlike the original pile of compost.  i understand that fresh poo is no good.

should i just grab some poo from the pile and not do anything to it before i add the jars of myc OR should i take my friends advice and heat it up to kill contams.

you should pasteurize, but not in the oven.

A jar or a bag. You need a meat thermometer to read the temps at the middle of the substrate. There are several teks on here detailing step by step precedure.

I would suggest getting it to field capacity, using jars or bag in a pot of water on the stove burner. Keep it between 140F-160F for 2 hrs.

i suggest TheNewGuy's Outdoor Tek. Moe's is good too. no pasteurizing needed. easy as pie! :mushroomgrow:

Those two teks consist of crossing your fingers and hoping for the best. They are meant for outside cultivation and have a high fail %.

I wouldn't suggest those at all.

Properly pasteurize your Hpoo and you'll have great results.

I've had success with using a big pot of water and a pillow case, like Roadkill did in his old ass horse poo tek.

I know it's not the best technique but it's the least complicated..  Then again it's the only method I've used lol

Then again, I've never pasteurized a lot of poo at once.  Maybe enough to make one average sized monotub.

Appreciate all the help guys.  I think i'm pretty sold on the Hydro invitro poo bag tek given the simplicity and high success rates of people on this forum.

I tried pasteurizing my hpoo in an oven bag in a pot of water on the stove.  I walked away for a couple minutes and on return the thermometer read 200 F.  Now, Do I need to start over with a fresh batch of poo?  I read somewhere that you don't want your poo to exceed 180-185 but it didn't say why.

Given, the bag was slightly touching the sides of the pot and I didn't use a whole lot of poo, just about 2 - 3lbs. But is this common? how long do people often leave there poo on the stove top for before it reaches the desired temp?  I think maybe I'll use a jar because that'll eliminate risk of puncturing a whole with the thermometer spike and I won't have to keep going through oven bags.
