Geocaching

My girlfriend and I have started doing it, and its a lot of fun.
Now, when I explain it to folks they always seem to get this weird look in their eyes like "dude thats kinda faggy" Im curious what the general thought is concerning this. Please vote and lemme know.
(And I really dont care what people think, because I really enjoy it, but I am curious)

Geocaching is indeed fun. The only major qualm I have with it it is that it can tend to lead people off of designated trails which can do lots of damage to fragile plant life as well as erode land unnecessarily. Other than that though it's a really cool idea.

Good call, never really thought about that. I can see how that could definately be an issue in places.
We pretty much just started doing it "seriously"..and this lasered mushroom is our "first 2 find" prize for when it eventually gets out there Our handle there is Mushroom420 and we made a pretty cool (IMO) cache. and I bought a fake mushroom micro cache for placement too.

I've been geocaching for about 8 years now. We don't go super often, but I enjoy it greatly. My name on there is the same as on here if anyone wants to look me up.

Yeah it's alot of fun
Sucks though, I had 2 really nicely decorated ammo cans stolen on the same day. Some dickwad is going around my town and ganking all the ammo cans.

I'm just wondering what kind of people you think you'll attract with that geocache. Probably the very first person to find it will be some burnout loser pothead whos going to steal it or vandalize it. It looks nice though.

It's a ton of fun.
It takes you to places you woulda never known about otherwise....plus it's cool when you go out of town for something. It's a game that serves as a travel guide....especially if you love hiking/the outdoors. And I like looking at my stats.
My girl and I make some good and fun caches. We have one, its considered a "micro" size. It's a little brown mushroom made of plastic that stakes in to the ground. On the bottom theres a cap thats removed to gain access to the signing log. People really like that one. It's been assigned a lot of favorite points. We had fun in writing the description (I dont say what it is, just hints) Here, check it out, this is it Mycology 101 by Mushroom420

They dont know what they look like until they arrive. I said it was a mushroom themed ammo can. That one did get stolen, but so did all the other ammo cans in my city. They stole about 15 ammo cans. (They sell for $10-20)
Faggots!
I had one that was creating quite a buzz for the month it was out before it got stolen. It was called A HERPETOPHOBICS NIGHTMARE!....it was a big 50 caliber ammo can covered in astro turf. I epoxyd plastic frogs, snakes and lizards all over it and hung a big rubber snake on the inside lid so when it was opened the snakes swung out. People really liked it, but it got stolen with the others in town.
The other cachers in the area know me as the over the top cache maker. I have a good rep for the ones I put out :-)

The thing is, most Geocachers are older folks. I went to a local event where you meet the names you see online. I, at 29 was the youngest person there.
It's surprisingly filled with folks in their 60s, and then a lot of folks in their 30s and 40s that do it with their young kids. The kids like the toys that are in the caches

Cool! I love caching, it's been a few years for me. I might have to go leave some suitably preserved shrooms at all the caches on the campus nearby. Did you leave any fungus of the non-plastic variety?

No, its technically against the rules leaving perishable items in caches, but I just spread the good word through my screen name, Mushroom420, and my caches

The other problem to the ones leading people off established trails are the ones too close to established trails. There's a public forest near me where I've found all the geocaches just because I wander by and there's a really clearly packed trail leading off the blazed path right to where it is.

Awesome man I've always wanted to make a polypore geocache! Honestly though, my obsession with mushroom hunting has completely distracted me from most of my other hobbies, including geocaching.

My girlfriend thought it'd be a cool idea in high school to hide a geocache that asked me to her prom, i thought we were just going caching, it was a wooden duck that was covered in camo ducktape hidden in the middle of some bushes 20 steps off the road :p
KEEP IT UP!

you mean like treasure
now i have to go geocaheing Saturday
i swear the government just wants me to drag a gps everywhere i go off road
and record the spots i hang out on a site to boot, even on the site it says use places that are special to you
edit: oh ya i seen a few of these in the city a few years ago, i didnt know they had to do with gps coordinates, they said to take something and leave something, i thought it was pretty cool and almost made my own not knowing it was gps geocaching
the funny thing is one of them was placed in some pine trees where all the kids smoked pot

The game is mainly for old people and children, I really doubt the government is looking into it to track people.
Seriously, in my experience that game tries to exclude people like us, it's very PG and it'd be better if they lost 90% of their rules.

Funny I ran across this thread because on 9-12-2013 I was looking for mushrooms and I found one of these ammo boxes used for geocaching (really designed for ammo duh)anyway it was stuffed in a hole in a tree. I didn't take anything out of it,there wasn't much in there but still cool to find. I did however leave a filtered cigar, only thing I really had to put in it, if a smoker finds it he will prob. grab it then start wondering where in the hell the lighter is because I didn't leave a light LOL. I have a garmin rhino but have never really figured out how to use it, I would probably need someone who knew how to use it spend the day going over it with me.
