is graffiti the coolest art form ever?

i think this may be true, because it is devoid of commercial interest...meaning: the artists do it only for the art, not for money, and because it is illegal, so they have to do it really quick.

certain graffiti can look cool, but when those fuckers go round putting "tags" on shit, that just pisses me off. No real art to it, it just makes our surroundings look ugly and hostile. Graffiti has its place sure, but it frequently goes too far.

I agree.

Graffiti is cool. I had a friend who was part of that whole East Village thing in New York in the early '80s... Some of it's good, and some is not...

Never said it wasn't! But there is a difference between the skill involved in making
good art, and the frankly antisocial behavior associated with tagging walls /
buildings / trains etc.. Personally I find tags ugly and offensive. Beautiful
handwriting is something which deserves respect. I have no respect for taggers.

there's this alley downtown called Grafitti Alley and it's filled with grafitti, shit they should make it a museum. And it's always changing. I'll post some pics of some work when i get home.

There's defiantly some really nice graffiti out there, like that first picture! that's insanely good...But what bugs me is the wanna be graffiti artists that have nothing better to do with spray paint than to right 'fuck' on a wall...whats that?

"and because it is illegal, so they have to do it really quick.

example:
"

then you post a pic of a piece that has most likely taken hours to finish, and has been painted on a 'legal' wall during daytime. so not quite the graffiti you were talking about. it's nice, but the guy/girl who did that (i dont suppose its you) could have done that in a museum as well, theoretically speaking.

real graffiti rocks. illest crews: SDK, MSN, MOAS.

illest vids: dirty handz 1 + 2

check it

also, tagging is part of graffiti whether you like it or not. most writers who paint full color pieces also tag the living fuck out of everything. yes it's vandalism, just like the full color stuff. it's both graffiti.

props to 'griekenland' for the following pic:

what I find funny about people who criticize tagging, is that they think taggers are somehow subject to the same logic as law-abiding citizens.

heres a quote from banksy (graf artist):

"You say the city belongs to you and your laws? Well then how come its got MY name written all over it."

hehehe, fuckers.

Ah I'm sure they're not "subject to the same logic as law-abiding citizens" but that doesn't stop it annoying the fuck out of me! I'm familiar with Banksy.. stencils his name on stuff doesn't he? I've seen some of his "work"

bansky is real good, is he from the uk? for some reason i think he is...I've always been into art, visual art more so, and recently started using spraypaint as a new medium and I was fairly impressed with the outcome, ill take pictures..

Since you ask, yes, advertisements do annoy me. Is that anything to do with graffiti? I don't think so. I see where you're coming from, like adverts are a kind of corporate graffiti but corporations don't go round vandalising trains, scrawling offensive words over public toilets where kids can see them, and covering walls in tags. Advertising is an unfortunate and ugly blot on society. Much like graffiti.

I know there are always going to be people who disagree and, as I said above, I do have some respect for certain types of graffiti. However, I also think that in general, it is something the world could really do without.
