Nightmare Alley 7.9/10 It was good but lacking something and it's hard to pin down what. Maybe the screenplay, maybe Bradley Cooper, IDK. An impressive cast, but failed to utilize some their talents enough. David Straithairn was quite good and for one second Willem Defoe was channeling Bobby Peru, like the country.
The book was written in 1946 and a movie was made the next year, but it didn't have the hard edged ending. I have a feeling Bob Dylan knew about the book and was thinking about that when he wrote, Ballad of a Thin Man.
Don't do the spook show.

That was a classic. I always thought whether by intention or not, the three detectives were following the path of Dorothy's three companions in the Wizard of Oz. Bud White got a brain, Ed Exley got courage, Jack Vincennes got a heart.

You know I didn't even think about that. That's a pretty good comparison.
Ok. Just finished watching Antebellum. Um.. I don't know. 6/10 for effort, I guess. I liked that they took history and modernized it. But how they did it? Movie didn't make sense. But you get a 6 for effort. Nice try... sort of.

The Granny (1995) 7/10

This movie was a hoot! Another one of those lost gems on VHS that never had a release beyond that format. It has the feel of a Lifetime movie and a late-nite Cinemax movie at the same time. It even stars one of the Skinemax Queens, Shannon Whirry, and there are short moments of bare breasts, but it never goes all out with the sex scenes with sultry saxophone soundtrack. It it low budget trash, but very entertaining. It could really use a re-make, scarier with more use of the mutated cat.

Smoke and Mirrors: The Story of Tom Savini (2015) 7/10

A fairly well-done documentary about horror make-up artist/actor/stuntman/director Tom Savini. I'm sure you've seen his face in one of the many cult classics he has appeared in. I didn't realize that he played part in so many films that entertained me in my youth, namely Creepshow and Friday the 13th.

I have to see that. Looks pretty interesting.
Donnie Darko. 10/10. For those who haven't seen it... I don't want to spoil it. It's a great movie.
Can't get enough of this movie. I love that they show the life of everyone around him if he had survived, and in the end, they show that he actually dies.

Alright. I have to rate Antebellum again.
Originality? 8/10. Like I said before, I like that they modernized a piece of history. But the execution was a little rusty. The plot was, I mean. The reveal could have been a little later.
As for the movie shots and angles? I never even noticed the first time around. They're absolutely amazing. And the music does them justice as well. That's a 10/10 in my book. This is one of those movies you have to watch two three times over to fully understand what they were really trying to do with it.

DΓΌnyayΔ± Kurtaran Adam (AKA The Man Who Saves The World AKA Turkish Star Wars) 1982 7/10

I do not even know where to begin with this one. Has the many years of watching absolute garbage to find "so bad it's good" gold warped my brain to a point where I am entertained by movies such as this? Have you ever wanted to see an incomprehensible mess of a movie that, in another dimension, would be a collaboration between Alejandro Jodorowsky and Godfrey Ho?
I must first explain that the version I watched was in original Turkish with no subtitles. The first 5 minutes or so shows 2 dudes flying around in Tie Fighters (? the bad guys) with images of starship battles from the original Star Wars projected behind them with no care at all placed with the editing of these projected scenes that it makes no sense. If I had the time and effort, I would re-edit and dub this movie myself and take out those first 5 minutes or so. The fight scenes are insanely paced and choreographed and The Raiders of the Lost Ark theme plays. There are some enemy monsters that appear and the roar of Godzilla is heard. The main villian, when he takes his mask off, looks like a young Turkish Charles Manson. There is a scene where there are a bunch of dead children laying in tombs with IV tubing coming out of them and all the tubes link up to a crazy straw that young Turkish Charlie drinks all their blood, simultaneously, and then the kids turn into fuzzy monsters.
I will be watching this again, one I gather enough drugs and booze to make sense of it all that time around.

Crimewave (1985) 8/10

I was pleasantly surprised with this one and had some really wacky moments that made me laugh out loud. I don't even think that Bruce Campbell is acting when he plays a part, he's just himself. If I had caught this one as a kid on cable TV back in the 80s, it would have been a favorite of mine, for sure.

Nightmare Alley 10/10
Wow. What a great movie! The interesting characters, the costumes, the classic setting, all the foreshadowing. Such a great story. Some reall bleak stuff in the movie but overall I enjoyed watching thru it. Fair warning: its 2.5 hours long so strap in for the long but worthy journey. The ending is cRaZy!

Lilya 4-ever(2002) 8/10
This movie is pretty grim, I will not sugarcoat it. Bleak bleak Russia at its finest. Oksana Akinshina got best actress awards for her role as protagonist and I have to agree she was amazing. Volodya is probably my favorite character in any movie from the last 6 months. Overall not much to complain about, not enough aesthetic surreal Russian landscapes for my taste, but then again I might have been ruined by Tarkovsky in that regard. Generally thought provoking and eye-opening.

Can't bring myself to give this a rating out of 10. It's a work of art and liked it very much. The soundtrack was excellent. Lovely, trippy, disturbing... dreamy.

Strong performances and good direction. A character study about a young women finding herself and relationships. Worth a watch if you like that kind of slow but powerful emotional rollercoaster.
