Cross of Iron(1977)- 9.5/10
I need my Peckinpah fix from time to time. A wwII film shown from the german perspective on the Russian front. In a sea ov heroic ally war movies, this anti-heroic axis anti-war movie is like a mine blowing apart the tracks ov the war film machine. It's not a film that pits one side against the other, it's one that stakes humanity against politics.
This one is fantastic all around. Certainly one ov James Coburn's strongest roles, if not the crowning one. His character is complex without being unrealistic. The action scenes are gritty and realistic. There's also a great scene with a 'strong bite' to it that is expected but classic nonetheless. Quality stuff, which is something i cant say for most war movies that regurgitate the same bs heroic formula.

I just watched The End of the Tour about Rolling Stone's interview with Infinite Jest author David Foster Wallace. It was mostly Wallace talking about himself and Jesse Eisenberg as the interviewer going "Right, right?" after he talks. Yeah don't know what I was expecting but it was pretty boring and granted I got pretty high but I nearly nodded off near the end. I'd say for Wallace fans only. I just scored some weed and some wax and I'm watching some movies. The next movie I'm going to watch is Amy the documentary about Amy Winehouse.

Alienator (1990)- 5/10
Appeasing my Jan-Michael Vincent fetish most recently has been this gem from Fred Olen Ray. Yeah, it's obviously bad but it's good. Anyone capable ov appreciating low budget camp will completely understand that contradiction. Basically, a galactic prisoner escapes and takes refuge on earth while a cyborg played by a female bodybuilder(Teagan Clive) aims to eradicate him. Sure the acting is horrendous at spots, the special effects cheesy, the tempo is a bit off, and the action rather non-gratuitous. Yet not only does it have cheesy camp appeal, but there's a plot twist that actually comes across as more convincing than some i've seen from blockbuster hits. One has to be in a certain mood for this kind ov film but it's good fun.
JMVs performance is average for post-airwolf period. He delivers his lines fairly well, but his facial expressions are too strained. Far better here than in xtro II but weak compared to his performance in demonstone, both from around the same time period.
The Night Before(2015)- 7.5/10
It's funny. Easy and stupid, yes, but funny. We were cracking up something fierce in the theatre. Seth Rogan and Michael Shannon had great roles. The church scene and most with Mr. Green in it were hilarious. I just was'nt fond ov the easy ending or the stupid angel wings. Whatever, cheap laughs.

I watched Amy and that movie has a lot of soul. Because you know how it ends, that creates a building sense that you want to save her but of course you can't. It may remind you of other times that you felt like that. It was kind of long at 130 minutes so that is how much of an investment it requires. The next movie I'm going to watch is Mississippi Grind. I still got plenty of weed left. I'm also going to watch The Tale of Princess Kaguya. (My favorite of those movies is still Spirited Away but I did like The Secret World of Arrietty.)

Now I've seen Mississippi Grind. Phew! Thought it was good for what it was which was a movie about a gambler who takes under his wing an older, more pathetic gambler I guess because he feels sorry for him. For example he lends him the money to go on this gambling spree undertaken for the very serious business of winning him enough money to pay off his gambling debts. That sort of thing either appeals to you or it doesn't.

Turbo Kid, 9.5/10. A low-budget, indie flick. If you're into Mad Max, Fallout or the Power Rangers, watch it. It is simply great. The acting can be wonky and the violence is waaaaaay over the top, but that is part of the charm. Speaking of charm, Apple is amazing.
