David Lynch: The Art Life

8/10

Pretty good documentary about David Lynch's life from childhood through Eraserhead. I wish it were longer so that it could go more deeply into his film career, but as the title implies, it's more about his beginnings as an artist than anything else. Recommended for any Lynch fans.

ASHY SLASHY! ASHY SLASHY!

I've seen the movies and the series.  Just starting the last one.  First one was more horror then humor.  I will watch all of them, is quite amusing.  Guess it is the last season. Bruce said it hurts like hell to have that chainsaw on his arm nowadays and retiring the character for good.

Oh well, was a good run spanning decades.

"I'm not finished yet."  "That's what they all say baby."

Spawn 9/10

I borrowed this Bluray from a friend from work months ago, totally forgot to watch it. Finally watched it today. One of the strangest, bizarre, trippy, coolest movies Ive ever seen. Really unique concept. I enjoyed its twistedness :yesnod:

Bright

7/10

it was a better than expected. some great photography, and locales to make the movie look suburb. it was out there to left-field, but all the more fun for it. solid 7.

Wow, just watched the full second season of Legion on Hulu in the same day with a short break to walk to the store for some beer.  Never watched that much of a series in one day.  Most of them were at least 45 minutes.  Just wanted to see if I could do it.

Of course the more fucked up I got as I started out sober and as time went by the more interesting and absurd/amusing it got as time went on.  Having seen season one so long ago was lost as they start it out so confusing and that is sober.

Oh yeah.  Wick the 3rd should be much better then Matrix the 3rd which is shit then and is shit now.  Doesn't really hold up well over time.  Someone compared the first Matrix with Filet Mignon and then the last one as finishing it off with a Mcfrosty at McDonalds.

I used to love getting really stoned before watching the new episodes of Legion. Excited to see S3 announced recently that's one of my favorite shows

Also been waiting for that new Spawn movie to come out for years now

HBO made a Spawn anime type series in the late 90's in case you didn't know.

Oh cool, might keep a lookout for it then. I don't really watch much anime or animated stuff at all, but the few I do I watch a decent amount though, so speaking of other shows that will have a new remake, just watched Berserk Golden Arc 3 (8/10) after hearing that Berserk will have a new series coming out

In The Shadow of The Moon

9/10

This is a documentary about the history of the Apollo missions from 1968 to 1972. I decided to watch it again to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, and while I am not a space colonization nut, I like the history of this time period and these activities. Flying to the moon was cool, but after accomplishing all that science, I see no real reason for our species to go back. We have nothing left to learn, and it's a total, barren wasteland. We need to clean up our own planet instead, though I am not sanguine about the chances of that. Still, the kid in me likes the Apollo history, and if you're similar, this is an excellent documentary.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu 10/10

Wow, thia movie really surprized me. It was amazing. It was epic. Also had some subtoe alien-UFO references. I like that.

The ending was a little cheesy but I still loved it!

Annihilation

9/10

This was my second time seeing it, and, though I liked it the first time around, I did like it better this time. A very impressive movie visually, with a good plot and a good ending. I get the feeling that the movie Stalker had some influence on this film, but that's sort of an abstract notion. Alex Garland is clearly an up-and-coming director to watch, joining the ranks of the younger directors like P.T. Anderson, Darren Aronofsky, Spike Jonze, David Fincher, Denis Villeneuve et al. Garland did Ex Machina which I love, so I'm definitely looking forward to future films of his.

The Magnificent Ambersons

10/10

This was Orson Welles' second film (1942), directing and writing, and though Citizen Kane receives most of the accolades as his best (and the greatest American movie ever made, according to most critics), he thought it was better, at least for the first two acts. There was a lot of controversy, because the studio would not allow Welles to end the movie the way he wanted, which was in a harsh, depressing, unhappy manner. In the version we see, it's rather neatly and positively ended (a scene that Welles did not shoot), but he wanted to highlight the ruin of the Ambersons and end it with the capstone of their downfall. The studio wouldn't have it, and Welles left instructions for editing, as he was actually in South America filming another movie when the film was edited, communicating with the post-production people by wire. He had no choice, contractually.

It is generally regarded as one of Hollywood's greatest tragedies that the studio cut out almost an hour of the film, and changed the ending. The movie is wonderful, but how much better could it have been if Welles was given creative control? We'll never know because the cut negatives were destroyed years later. No one knows what it really might have been.

In short, the movie is about a wealthy established family in the Midwest around the turn of the twentieth century -- "society-types," as it were -- whose lives are transformed by the invention and distribution of the automobile. One needs to read up on just how much the car transformed society, and human consciousness, as we don't really understand the phenomenon since everyone alive grew up with it! But that's largely what the film is about, and it leads to the Ambersons' gradual and eventual downfall. This is a very rough sketch, and I urge anyone interested just to watch the movie. It's fantastic.

Here is a brief quote from the film, which illustrates the sociocultural automotive theme quite well:

Quote:

I'm not sure George is wrong about automobiles. With all their speed forward, they may be a step backward in civilization. It may be that they won't add to the beauty of the world or the life of men's souls. I'm not sure. But automobiles have come. And almost all outward things are going to be different because of what they bring. They're going to alter war and they're going to alter peace. And I think men's minds are going to be changed in subtle ways because of automobiles. And it may be that George is right. It may be that in ten or twenty years from now, if we can see the inward change in men by that time, I shouldn't be able to defend the gasoline engine but would have to agree with George: that automobiles had no business to be invented.

Damn good movie. The studios probably screwed Welles more than any other filmmaker.

Death on the Nile  (1978)

9/10

A very good adaptation of Agatha Christie's book of the same name, Peter Ustinov stars as Belgian super-detective Hercule Poirot, and he's excellent. David Niven plays his fellow investigator, and was also exquisite. Mia Farrow, Bette Davis, Maggie Smith, Angela Lansbury, George Kennedy and Jack Warden round out the spectacular cast. The movie is, happily, extremely faithful to the book, which was one of Christie's best and is certainly one her most famous.

If you're interested, I seriously recommend reading the book first, because if you see the film first, the book will really have very little kick. But either way, the story is amazing.
