Hereditary

9/10

great, a bit too low-key, some of it's intentional (to betray a notion of "realism" in a movie that exaggerates it, even in terms of it's themes but...), it's really got some great subtext, though, addressing magic, and the themes are sort of magical, in and of itself. awesome, but real slow and subtle.

explains curses and the ironic/poetic cycle in magic experiences- though, done in a spoopy way with dark themes.

(PS: didn't know before, but this great movie is connected to two of my favorite horror movies this past few years, It Follows, and The Witch- but while the Wtich was basically Christian lore, with great angles and story-telling, and It Follows was a campy but ultimately original and subtextual, as well, kinda deal- this Hereditary film was basically as close as i've seen to a horror movie get it right with the details of a truly frightening topic- it's like Babadook was for The Exorcist, except instead of being a completely subtextual affair- with correspondences to a degree of accuracy concerning metaphysical concepts, like Exorcist [it, through the guise of "Christian lore" again]- this film, Hereditary, is a more contextual and accurate portrayal of magic- but with some context missing, it's actually only literally portraying these concepts- but accurately, so altogether...spooky as fuck. -- also, director was influenced by Ordinary People- one of my ultimate favorite movies.)

i wrote a bit of a esoteric review of some of the themes in Hereditary, that i think some people wouldn't've totally processed, in full, that i hope to expound on a bit....

https://www.minds.com/CynicalBastard/blog/filmic-esotericism-hereditary-possible-spoiler-alert-territo-888234590701088768

Hereditary, as a film-based magic spell, devised a system that can be used to explain the "Architectonic" development of the demon-based world (that is, if you can see it, via mine own processes).

Through individual chaos, grows concepts into memetics and language, which create icons- these "icons" are energetically charged "totems" (of a make, whether enlarged, reduced, et al), charged (and a power to engage what I call psychical emitters) (and charged alike symbols and other forms of communication, ect), charged, that is, with "demonic energy" (ie, forces of psychical emanations, or in other more occult terms, "intelligence" [perhaps behind cosmic background radiation] [eg, "the model world" of Hereditary], that is to say, intelligence of the preliminal/magical/poetic sort....And demonic forces do not just use buildings [or models of them] as hosts, architectonic ground in bodies are perfectly normal, as well- in fact, better, all the better to manipulate and express fear, which empowers the psychical emissions, which engender greater forces to contract (through a domino effect, and corresponding effects, et al.) The architectonic world is the realm of the demonic...that it, of psychical forces- usually in dreams- but of course, there has been plenty of documentation into parapsychology and the occult, and supernatural. Why do you think it's always considered to have a "container" in the tropes of ritual "magick" in movies...because of the architectonic realm, the realm of inward forces that display in ironical or poetical ways, to achieve a totemic (see: Iconic) "desire"- by way of language and memes, the conceptual reality around us all grows, and it takes over, and wishes to reproduce- it eats.

It all gets told in the very beginning (but not really, some of the tale is told out of frame- in dialogue only- but referring to the past life of the family- more on that). Not only is the audience the "outside looking in", (into the doll-house) but it is the architectonic, the world of manifest causal reality of the chthonic (the outside) "looking in". The meme libidinal economy is real. -- Think of the ontological levels involved, the architectonic is the world of detached phenomenon (to us), because it is unreal to us- just as with Charlie, the reality of her assemblages & appropriations, are a level convolved in that, twain, if you will, as the 'iconic' ontology of the 'demonic' architectonic levels.

[spoilers]

Gabriel [the husband] is an archetype (archetype, arche [primary source] archon, architectonic; catching my drift? these are forces- elementary forces), and is the name of an angel, by the way. He was just tormented, in the most abstruse and emotional ways, by the demon(s) [also cult]....plus Gabriel, representing the angel, was also pure, so be it, his quick death by fire.

Also, there is a sociological impact, too...after all, the demon needs an effem male, which isn't ONLY highlighted symbolically through the transition between Charlie and Peter, but also through the mention of why [spoilers] -- why Peter is noted as deficient, due to his pot-smoking and his inattentiveness (leading to his love interest taking the actions she takes, as well- also the look of contempt in class, ouch), which is, in part, surely, correlated to the notion of Annie trying 'to kill Peter', by the various things she mentions she tried- leading to him being inattentive and effeminate, in his either raising, or his growth.

The noise Charlie makes is the emanation (by the demon) of the event of her hitting the pole, encapsulated by the demonic nature inside her, maybe sardonically, recapturing that for itself, inwardly, to add to the capitulation of the moment- knowing that it'd eventually happen, just as it did. Perhaps to cope with the lacking nature of the body it knew it had to inhabit. Why Peter, in the end, looked so exalted, not for the cult, for the new body.

There is the theory (brilliantly conceived, but not by I- I am appropriating this by poiesis) that the father of Annie was the "host" of the entity "imprinting" (nicely said) onto his wife (the grandmother), and "got the demon out" by starving himself- so all in all- I think that's a brilliant deduction, on what was the factor of psychical emission that caused the emanation (mana = architectonic mind) of the entity, in lieu of the audiences' notions concerning the filmic roles here- though they deign to show the design element, brilliantly made, in the documentary of the film (called Cursed), that WASN'T shown in the film, of the house on a raised platform, of dirt, on top the house not-so-normal, and then duplicating downwards, as it gets filled with more and more dirt.

It's manipulation. The grandmother was tricked by the notion of riches- she had them in her pictures, in her ceremonies. The real riches, however, was losing her soul to the demon, becoming an emanation of the demon- in otherwords, they become one with it- hence the "reward" aspect being true, but also, ironical. The demon simply wants to persist and grow.

These are all "manifestations" [mana + (in)festation] of the "demon" in the film- which represents archetypes and values in the magical personality.

The triangle in Grandma's room may refer to the 'Ungrounding of the Trigon'- the literal "release" (the headless trope) symbolizing the architectonic forces (of the demonic) coming forth from within, from the outside, looking in. See: the picture of Peter, with the holes in the eyes.

The demon is a demon "of mischief" because he always works by proxy of an poetical/ironical event or psychological/emotional/traumatic manifestation. The words may be translated to "Blind Dragon, open your eyes, come forth [in otherwords, "by proxy"], King [of] [Pandemonium - ie...] Noise"- or 'Tempest', or 'Maelstrom', et al.

The architectonic world is the world for the libidinal meme economy of concepts and demonic forces from individuated chaos, expressed most easily in language. Hello there. Watch this movie if you haven't already.

though it's obscure, at best- but i didn't want to spoil too much, and you could write a book about the length of the themes in this film.

Great movie.  Best Nicholas Cage performance hands down.

I'll have to check that out. I really liked Cage in Wild at Heart, Leaving Las Vegas, Lord of War and Joe.

Joe didn't get much attention. He plays a major player in the dregs of rural society who struggles to control his temper. His job is to run a work crew that kills trees (apparently illegally) so a wood or paper company can replant pines. Because the trees must be killed without drawing attention, the technology used is quite bizarre. I'll have to watch it again before deciding on an 8 or 9 rating.

I love the joke when he cuts his wrist breaking a window and passing out from the blood loss.  Then later having it wrapped and Crowe making a joke about suicide and cutting his wrists.  That was funny, good movie.

Us and Them  6/10

For the younger folk that values money and the false dreams above all else but not done very well in conveying the message.  One learns over time, especially when in nature for a long period, it really doesn't mean much.

Steal from the 1 percent, make a political point, or just throw ones life away and end up in a cell or in fear constantly.  The roulette table is a good metaphor.  The system is rigged, especially the banking system as they used as the main character to use as a metaphor.  But to anyone informed or that follows globalism, we all share the same dilemma.  Just in different ways.  How does one go more about equality or anything near it in this world as we are all connected?

I could give a shit less about it but will stand by those with any kind of integrity and ideas and ways to improve my life in this world.  And it is not banking and stealing and torturing, and inflation, and war, and endless violence.

I see a larger picture in the shortness of my life.  Fleeting luxeries hold very little interest to me.  I am beginning to learn and I feel happy for the first time in a very long while.

I haven't seen the ending and I don't know it yet so no spoiler.  Don't know what will happen with these characters.  The reason I give it a 6 is because they play all the stereotypes of the richest 1 percent.  I didn't learn anything, it is like 101.  It is more about what he or his others will decide, so the drama as it plays out.  Life is strange and a drama in itself.  I've learned to lesson it over time yet I do feel millennials are fucked long term and the dinosaurs will go on as it is already to late to really change much with globalism.  Even for the most idealistic.  I was jaded, now I just don't really give a shit.  I can suffer and people bring it upon themselves.  I am just more well adjusted to if I have to go without being in nature for extended periods of time.

Earth will be fine as in a National Geographic quote from a Russian who has spent the most time in space of anyone.  And yeah, the earth didn't make national bounderies and doesn't care about politics.  All I care is that he said the earth will endure despite the changes man does to it, especially those of the 1 percent who can't see what is right in front of them and just want like a greedy two year old everything they see to own and destroy and then lose interest that we give power to.  And support as our leaders.

Fine, have made peace with myself, and I won't go after false treasure and trivial things in relationships and possessions and I am actually happy after I decided that.  Life is ok and fleeting.  The structure as it is globally, won't last all that long.  Science speaks louder than this clusterfuck of man made finances and power and control that won't last.  Look at it all, this earth and this life that goes so fast.  I just feel fortunate to have an understanding and wisdom that few have and even fewer live.  I have lived cowardly.  Yet I am more than ok just letting things go to shit and not stealing, torturing, creating drama in this world and living out my life with those I love and being in nature that gives a peace very few have.

But when you come across them.  It is amazing.  Long post and I get the points of the movie so far, but really, it is all where one's focus is on and what one values in life.  We go on, I believe this, but people will do what they will do.  I don't need to concern myself so much with this news and global bullshit.  It's great to be out of it for awhile.

I think this might be the longest post on the movie board ever, lol.  I don't want to write about the latest star wars movie or Marvel movie.

The Andromeda Strain

8/10

Watched this movie because of watching a Dan Burisch interview. This 1971 movie is really interesting and has lots of hidden messages inside of it pertaining indirectly to UFO crashes, Area 51 and S4. Its a strange movie, one of the strangest Ive seen. Kinda reminds me of Supernova or Promethus, but a lot more subtle. Its dated but Im glad i watched it. I gave it a high rating cause of the amount of disclosure it proved for me. A few scenes are either really boring or annoying.

Just ordered the 2008 mini-series version as well. Cant wait to see the updated version :yesnod:

Pretty good Tarantino. I'm not at all sure why he filmed it in 70mm though. Most of it takes place inside a cabin.

Awesome. Honestly, some of the best directing I have ever seen. John Ford was truly a master, and no one working today really comes close to his pure directing ability. Beautiful shots of Monument Valley in Utah, some of the sequences would have been painstakingly difficult to pull off without making mistakes, and then I'm sure it was taxing and frustrating as hell to do multiple takes of some of these scenes. Must have been a very difficult movie to make, but the finished product is close to flawless.

He's one of my favorite director/writers today.  I'm really looking forward to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.  I like when he blends fiction with fact.
