Gilliam movies. Just bought zero whatever. When in Portland with my brother watched it at a small movie theater. I was making people uncomfortable by how hard I was laughing.
He just goes into the esoteric like few directors can. It makes sense for those with the eyes to see. Patting me on the back as it went so deep within and was to the point of hysterical laughing. But it is Portland. Not afraid of getting kicked out for being fucked up, Just parts of it where Gilliam, the director, gets it perfect, wasn't bothering anyone. Just more concern looking back on it is, how fucked up is this guy?
Like I said, just bought it to stream and I sense when I do choose to watch it again, I just can't handle it now.

The Quiet Place 7.5/10 Very good directorial debut for Jim but the fact that the main couple decided to get pregnant at least twice in a world where any sound gets you brutally killed really bothered me. and the daughter not clueing in that her earpiece hurts the monsters (after seeing it happen several times!) and turning the earpiece off to allow the monsters to kill her dad was totally absurd. If she felt guilty about her brothers death then she should feel super guilty about her dads death. Pretty crappy climax tbh, but it still made me cry
The Endless 4/10 the ending was laughably bad

Not nearly as good as the hype. Glad it was free from the library. Soairse Ronan is pretty cool though.

Solo 10/10
One of the best movies Ive ever seen. My best friend was right. The Action. The Characters. The Adventure. The Lovestory. The Creativity. All felt so connected to the Star Wars Universe. Solo is a masterpiece and is one of my favorite Star Wars movies of all time. It is what I call a "Perfect Movie", self-embodiment of everything its supposed to be. Would definitely watch again, especially on psychedelics.

Casino - 8/10 with 5 being average.
A long film but the plot justified it. What happened with his wife in the end was pretty predictable after the first bank scene.

Meet the Millers 10/10
One of my favorite comedies of all time. Great premise, plus Jennifer Aniston is one of my favorite actresses. One of the best parts (and strangest parts) of the movie is its actually laced with feel-good family values that hits me right in the feelz. Its genius how they blended the two elements of adult comedy and touching family themes together.
Love this movie. It can pretty stupid at times but I love it

Mom and dad. 4/10
I'd been looking forward to watching this "jet black comedy" as it's advertised as soon as I saw it. I didn't realize it was a recent 2018 release I had hoped it was a bit of a whispered about gem like God Bless America turned out to be.
It was fairly slow to start, not bad in any sense but there's only 90 minutes of craziness and they definitely had a vision of making a movie about everyday modern Life as it slowly delves into insanity. Which they executed with Grace and beauty but it was simply the wrong the vision imo, this film grossly undercapitalized on the talent available and the juicy premise, what role could lovably insane Nic Cage be more natural for than a loving dad who's gone homicidially insane? Cage could absolutely make the film believable and hold itself together we'll if we dived directly into the insanity but thedirextor couldn't decide if he was doing a suspense thriller or a creepy horror film for the first third of the movie.
Luckily for the remaining two thirds he/she remembered they were in fact doing neither, it's a black comedy, and then the fun finally begins. Lance Henrikson was a nice surprise for me as he kept up with cage in the craziness well and I had seen zero adverts I was just surprised.
The only funny moments at all in fact (to me) we're when nic would give loving every day comments to his wife Selma Blair like "great idea i love you sweetie" as she devises a plan to kill their children with natural gas and a garden hose. Only other memorable laugh was when nic Cage had an upswing in his voice as he called his kids motherf****s it was so random and entertaining with his crazed face it was rewind worthy. Such golden talent absolutely under utilized, Selma Blair took the lead role as the parent murderer which is just weak, cage was whimpering like a girl with a cheap wooden door as the barrier between them. The shining was when, 40 years ago and Nicholson busted thru a door with an axe and a crazy face and today in 2018 nic Cage is depressed whimpering behind a wooden door that he can't get in and kill his family. And she maintains discipline. Whatever. They even had a sawzall. Absolute failure to seize the opportunity the writers had even written themselves into.
And then this same door that was so impenetrable one second now Selma Blair can stick the knife thru with full penetration and no effort like it's kleenex, when suspense demands she stabs her daughters finger thru the other side, but oh wait, there's a kitchen stalemate for hours because of this intimidating wooden door.
Or how about all the b rate first takes that were never reshot like when dead people visibly flinch as other actors jump around them or when or some of the really unrealistic and frustrating choreography or timing on screen - like I get the writers said that this character runs and this character trips or whatever but it has to be captured on film in a believable way.
To illustrate how deeply they failed in these respects I must admit Armageddon is a favorite movie of mine it never let's me down when I want to half watch something. It never once bothered me the huge Jerry bruckheimer flames in space or the other thousand scientific inaccuracies, it was entertaining to watch and if you zoned in and out yourself in the situations instead of analyzing it was very fluid ans entertaining. I didn't come for a science lesson I came for science fiction.
So an avid Armageddon lover who never noticed or cares about all those glaring inaccuracies is appalled to see unbelievable scenes where the power in the situation changes greatly affecting storyline (victims had upper hand then dumb unbelievable event causes them to be victims again, this time perhaps leading to a character dying off or loss of weapons / shelter / advantage)
The overall premise which led me to fight and claw my way towards seeing this movie was let down by a multitude of failures, to put it shortly it was under imagined and under shot (obviously needed several retakes) and over edited. Such a polished film quality and post production value.
So underwhelming. I actually went back and lowered my score upon completion of this review Im sad to give. I laughed maybe three times. It was entertaining but has zero replay value. Go watch God Bless America instead or if you're sick like me lemme know some other good ones

I like Gilliam movies. Just bought it to stream. I just remember vacationing with my brother in Portland, and yes, Portland is weird and hence the keep Portland weird vibe that goes on there.
Seeing the Zero Theorem there, I don't know. Gilliam is from the States but he is great at risking and entertaining.
Some of his movies are outdated as he didn't have the budget or technoligy at the time, Monty Python exluded, how he pulled that off is amazing to me during that time, but this one was extreimly strange.

God Bless America (2011)
9/10
I'm loading it up now to rewatch and scratch my dark comedy bone. Figured I may as well spread the knowledge I think this was a random Netflix I found one time in the past.
It has a Darko entertainment logo at the beginning with the Donnie Darko rabbit emblem that intrigues meaybe I can look into them for more movies like these i like Donnie Darko as well.
So this movie starts with a very polite man who like many of us is forced to keep his confrontational thoughts to himself to be nice even though he's only having them bc he wants his neighbors to keep their kids quiet at night or stop blocking his car in the driveway making him late for work or just all around nice guy being stepped on.
Insomnia sets in and he stays up watching f late night jersey housewives and other reality trash and gets a phone call from his wife who divorced him, learning his daughter he never sees is now a spoiled California sweet sixteen princess who cries when she doesn't get a new iPhone every time it comes out.
Realizing hes the odd man out and not long for this world he pulls a pistol and puts it in his mouth when he has this epiphany.... Why shoot himself when he can spend what life he has left killing everyone that he sees is tbe problem?
American idol judges, spoiled teenage princesses, they all get smoked in this hilarious movie, such perfect casting the normal guy you relate to and feel bad for, his bubbly psychotic attractive sidekick. And the hilarious way they meet.
Great movie. Comedy well done Imo, such dark content matter in a way but it's presented so comically and from a character you end up relating too and rooting for. Many movies fail on getting us to like or care for characters.

Love Donnie Darko and have watched it many times over. Since I have Netflix I will check out God bless America. Especially since it is the 4th if it is still on it. Thanks for the recommendation.

Yeah I really liked this one too. I had a couple buddies watch it and they told me it was too fucked up and that I was fucked up for liking it
That opening scene with the neighbors and the crying baby. Wow. I know it was just a daydream but holy balls

I watched the trailer and it looks like it might be fun, but the trailer has that lame modern mainstream 'arthouse' movie music to it that I hate, kind of like Juno although I mostly like Juno. Does it have that music through the movie?

Tbh I don't know and I watched it yesterday, I do know they reference juno and it's stripper creator in one of their many tirades.
I laughed a lot, and I'd seen it several times prior. Unfortunately mom and dad forgot it was supposed to be a comedy, this one never forgot. Very comedic, again such perfect casting the girl is phenomenal in her role, a lot of the comedy is facial expressions, other is comedic timing or silence as an answer to a question, other times it's completely unexpected turn of events that only a black comedy can get away with bc how the person dies ends up being the joke for example.
These moments of shine for this movie are again why mom and dad failed imo, it spent half rhe movie as a serious movie and this one wastes no time in injecting dark humor while we get to know the character in the first half, for example when he shoots up his whole office in the beginning. Stark difference, I honestly thought last night this film should be a study in this genre for film students, it has multiple types of comedy, such crucial casting success and it appeals to many common burgeoning feelings in this country and uses the film as a medium to project these "wake up, our values are shit" moments with ethical rants and tirades much like Kevin Smith's clerks for example where two characters actually debate for three minutes some critical tbinking. It pulled on so many elements I truly think it will be enjoyable to many.
Great film

I dunno if God bless America is still on netflix, it's where I originally saw it. But I recommend it to everyone who enjoys comedy and doesn't like American culture, it immediately became one of my top ten movies it's well worth a search.
Dusty bottoms - lol yeah that's what I'm saying the bar is set high for black comedies with this movie and I always specificy "black" bc you can get away with killing someone in the opening scene if you do it right. I still can't get over how long it took nic Cage to go crazy in the other movie.
My favorite part of God bless America is when he puts the rag in the gas tank and lights it on fire and starts to walk away and the music is all upbeat and aggressive then he turns around and the music stops as he Chases the flaming rag down the parking lot and gets busted by all her teenage friends and has to improvise...lol
