L.A. Confidential (1997) - 9/10
"Neo-noir"? You bet... what a sweet movie though, a story about police corruption with plenty twists and turns. Russell Crowe was good.

I was watching The Martian, got half way then my On Demand got fucked up. Loved the clever plot. Gotta rewatch it again, really good.
And with all good movies, the book is always better

I like this movie and never saw the whole thing. I think the gun battles have great sound effects, i dont know it just sounds so exciting.
Makes me want to rob a bank and start shooting the second i see police.
I couldn't agree more, and yet another great film from 1995!

Species (1995) (8/10)
A great fun B grade sci fi thriller kind of thing. Some amazingly trippy sequences with visualising what the alien is thinking/feeling. The actors work really well together, and there's a lot of humour going on, parodying certain character cliches and tropes, and sometimes you're not sure how intentional the humour is, but this movie seems to wink at you a fair bit. The chemistry between the actors seems very genuine, and Michael Madson is heaps of fun. It features designs by HR Giger. Some really nice cinematography and flow. The plot is very much B grade but it works. I watched it twice.
The Wicker Man (2006) (8/10)
A remake of the 70s film. First off, I love the look of the film, and the setting - it's really quite beautiful. I think this one improved on the original in some ways, but fell short in others, but ultimately was very entertaining. The metaphor with the bee colony I really liked, and how the men are treated. I think the humour in this one wasn't quite intentional, but that just adds to it for me.
Nicholas Cage is a very entertaining actor, and this one sees him playing a character who's personality is never really set in stone. It feels like the chemistry of the scenes are flowing nicely, but then they had to throw in something to stay faithful to the original. Like the scene where he's in the bar ordering a drink, and then he suddenly starts banging on a glass and scowling at everyone about how serious the situation is. It's pure gold.
The thing is, I find most highly critically rated commercial films boring as fuck, and this I really enjoyed. So many elements have to come together to make a film, and it's almost certainly not going to turn out exactly as was planned, and that's what I love about them. Greater things arise from chance happenings and completely unintentional outcomes. I'm really looking forward to watching it again.
I still think that this idea could be made into a better film than either the original or the remake. The original I liked, but I don't like those scenes where it's like a staged kind of set piece with lots of people performing something or dancing around or whatever. I feel it's cheap and tacky and takes away from the unique language of film. Its hard to explain what I mean, but like the scene in Point Break where they play football on the beach, or the scene in Fear and Loathing showing the high fly circus act.
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
Just watched this last night, and will most likely watch it again tonight. Wow. I haven't seen a lot of films pre 60s so I didn't really know what to expect, but this really blew me away. I need to watch it again to be able to write more about it.

There's TCM showings on May 13 & 16. If you're gonna rewatch it, the big screen is a nice way. I actually saw it a couple months ago through the "Flashback Cinema" thing, similar to TCM. But the theater around here that runs TCM has nicer, bigger screens.

The Post
9/10
Superbly directed recent film about government censorship vs. freedom of speech and the press. It's rather depressing to learn that we haven't come anywhere since 1971. Obviously, certain segments of society have a large percentage of the people believing that all news is fake except that news which one likes. And so certain parties tell people which news sources are no good, effectively censoring them in the eyes of millions. In 1971 it was Nixon, and now it's Trump. Freedoms should be more robust after 47 years, not in danger of further erosion. It's a thought-provoking film.

A Bad Moms Christmas 8/10
This movie really surprized me. On the radio, i heard some bad reviews on it but overall i thought it was pretty well done. It was funny, thoughtful and mostly original when compared to the original. There was some dumb or overused jokes that detracked from the movie's quality but i found it pretty minor. Overall it was an awesome movie. Theres a part at the end where a major thing gets resolved and the speech they have really hit me in the feelz, something that rare in comedies. I couldnt help but tear up.

Its also nice to see a woman-centric movie, something thats kinda rare to see. Id see it again.

Well, darn, that might present some complications. Sunset Boulevard is awesome on the big screen, though, and a pretty common one they bring to theaters. Like I said, it will be my second time just this year. There has to be something like that in your neck of the woods...

Mayhem. Surprisingly good movie. One of the best I have seen in a while. Low budget but good.
Survivalist. Was to slow paced without much dialogue. I turned it off when a chick was giving herself an abortion with a coat hanger. You see her naked quite a bit. I rate her breasts a solid 8 out of 10.

Tomorrowland 9/10
I really enjoyed this movie. This is the type of movies I love and I feel like Disney nailed it with this one. Had all the sci-fi action one could hope for with some oddball comedy thrown in there. There are parts of the movie that were cheesy, like the fight scenes, but overall, it was awesome.
The best part of Tomorrowland was all the references to Ufology, like breakaway societies, underground societies, MK Ultra, MJ-12, Project Aquarius, Project Looking Glass, Stargate technology, Project Stargate (psychic research), alien tech, and the world disaster that we avoided in 2012 by shutting down the artificial stargates. Ive never seen a movie with this much references to Ufology, the closest other one is Black Panther.
I was very impressed with the plot line and action of the movie. I wish they would make a sequel, but it flopped in the theaters so there will be no sequel

Evil Genius 6.5/10
It started off strong but I didn't like how they closed it out. And it also felt overly dramatized by the director.
The story itself is pretty fucking wild though.
