Cross of Iron(1977)- 9.5/10

I need my Peckinpah fix from time to time.  A wwII film shown from the german perspective on the Russian front.  In a sea ov heroic ally war movies, this anti-heroic axis anti-war movie is like a mine blowing apart the tracks ov the war film machine.  It's not a film that pits one side against the other, it's one that stakes humanity against politics.

This one is fantastic all around.  Certainly one ov James Coburn's strongest roles, if not the crowning one.  His character is complex without being unrealistic.  The action scenes are gritty and realistic.  There's also a great scene with a 'strong bite' to it that is expected but classic nonetheless.  Quality stuff, which is something i cant say for most war movies that regurgitate the same bs heroic formula.

Alienator (1990)- 5/10

Appeasing my Jan-Michael Vincent fetish most recently has been this gem from Fred Olen Ray. Yeah, it's obviously bad but it's good.  Anyone capable ov appreciating low budget camp will completely understand that contradiction.  Basically, a galactic prisoner escapes and takes refuge on earth while a cyborg played by a female bodybuilder(Teagan Clive) aims to eradicate him.  Sure the acting is horrendous at spots, the special effects cheesy, the tempo is a bit off, and the action rather non-gratuitous.  Yet not only does it have cheesy camp appeal, but there's a plot twist that actually comes across as more convincing than some i've seen from blockbuster hits.  One has to be in a certain mood for this kind ov film but it's good fun.

JMVs performance is average for post-airwolf period.  He delivers his lines fairly well, but his facial expressions are too strained.  Far better here than in xtro II but weak compared to his performance in demonstone, both from around the same time period.

The Night Before(2015)- 7.5/10

It's funny.  Easy and stupid, yes, but funny.  We were cracking up something fierce in the theatre.  Seth Rogan and Michael Shannon had great roles.  The church scene and most with Mr. Green in it were hilarious.  I just was'nt fond ov the easy ending or the stupid angel wings.  Whatever, cheap laughs.

Dragon Gate Inn(1967)- 7/10

Classic wuxia.  I ate my last meal with chopsticks so i was in the mood for a movie ov the sort.  Decent storyline, action packed(especially toward the end), some mind games and unpredictability.  Some good fight scenes, but it's almost entirely sword and arrow fare.  I would have liked to see some hand on hand.  Some background noises are incredibly grating and there's a little anti-gravity ridiculousness going on, but overall it was very good for 1967 wuxia.  I'm not sure if there's a dubbed version but i watched it in mandarin with subtitles.

Swoon(1992)- 9/10

The mid eighties to mid nineties were clearly the best era for gay cinema and this is a solid installment.  Black and white and set in the early to mid twenties, it chronicles the true story ov two gay lovers who kidnap and murder a 14 year old.  A very good and stylized effort that only lacks stimulating atmosphere and polished detail in parts.  Unlike Araki's the living end ov the same year, the gay lovers perform the murder seemingly without causation, the money being merely a benefit to the killing.  And while their love affair is fuelled by crime, it's very apparent that their relationship is complex and carries with it a degree ov contempt for one another.  It also reifies certain aspects ov censorship and blame typical ov 1920s America, such as the women being asked to leave the courtroom when talk ov gay sex is introduced, blame ov their behavior targeted at their sexuality, and a later crime committed in prison being pinned on an invisible 'negro' toward the press instead ov the actual white perp.  The flippant nature behind the killing reminds ov the murders within McNaughton's excellent Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer with the added element ov the crime being necessary to fuel their relationship.  A fantastic film that only would have been better if perhaps Jarman did it.  And the sexy scenes could have been much more explicit .

My Beautiful Laundrette(1985)- 9/10

A well scripted sweet and sour installment in the golden age ov gay cinema(mid 80s to mid 90s).  MBL(LBM, little brown mushrooms in reverse.. ha) is a film ov stark contrasts that find theirselves face to face at once, the blanketed tension building until exploding toward the film's end.  A very cool little film that does'nt try too hard in driving home any concrete message despite the strong conflicts that dominate it.  The movie begins with question marks and ends with them as well.  Nothing is overdone here and the love affair between the two main characters is quite sweet and authentic given their circumstances.  Great atmosphere, again demonstrating strong contrast betwixt classes in England.  Main characters are cute too!  Love scenes between them are sparse, but that's for the better in a film like this.

It seems to me, however, that the film suffered a bit in the editing room.  It's a shadowy thinker's movie ov hints and question marks, but i feel that it could have carried a longer duration without becoming tedious.  There was certainly room to expand upon the main female character.

Good stuff though IMO, but not for those who like definitive answers.

Freddy Got Fingered(2001)- 8/10

Great comedy i've seen many times.  Yeah it's dated and one ov those love it or hate it movies, but i think it's hilarious.  Not much to say about it really.  It's cathartic to watch something like this IMO.  Get the ol' giggles out.  Only got about halfway through watching it Monday night though as our cocks came out and awareness transferred toward eliciting bodily pleasures, our last orgasm cuming just prior to the elephant's blow at film end.

The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover(1989)- i do'nt want to leave numerical ratings anymore

Anyone see this?  Anyone?  Okay.... wow!  What an absolutely absurd but strangely beautiful film.  The 'thief' in this film is one ov the most disgusting, obnoxious, and irritating characters i've ever seen, so much so that his presence alone could make it a horror film.  I'm reminded ov Genghis Khan.  The wife steals the show however, carrying out a perverted revenge that caps the film in a way that's almost predictable in its absurdity but sadistically pleasing all the same.

There's a definite fetishistic threesome going on between sex, eating, and defecating/urinating that's certainly not for everyone.  Everything is over the top and it's unashamedly pretentious in its extravagance and exaggeration.  The wife's costumes are amazing and the quiet parts ov the film involving her and her lover had beautiful aural and visual atmosphere.  The four title roles all performed their parts effectively, but I feel that only the wife developed her role during the course ov the film, at last truly exposing her complexities nearing the end.

I hated it at first and damn near stopped watching.  I loved it by the end.  Very, very bizarre and surreal.

Time of the Gypsies/Dom za vesanje(1988)

After viewing Arizona Dream maybe two years back or so and absolutely loving it, it is with great amazement to me after watching this that i did not pursue other works from Emir Kusturica immediately following.  TotG is another fantastic film from this visionary Serbian director, and i will absolutely be sure to watch more ov his films ASAP.

TotG is a tale ov gypsy life, concealed truths, divided allegiances, magick, and revenge spun around a complex boy-to-man who would be better off as a bird.  TotG clearly possesses the same surreal nature ov Arizona Dream, all the while balancing whimsical visions with brutal realism upon an axis made ov glass.  It's tragic and passionate, and as far as i can tell authentic to reifying both the positive and negative aspects ov gypsy culture.

Most characters are very strong with my favorite being the iron willed medicine woman grandma.  The atmosphere is very evocative and with a well fitting score.  There's flying forks, fucking chickens, and child buying/selling.  Beautiful and passionate, but real and depressing like all my favorite films.  I'm definitely looking forward to watching more Kusturica films.  This was in Romany/Serbo-Croatian with English subtitles.

Thunderheart(1992) and Incident at Oglala(1992)

I've been a fan ov thunderheart since i first saw it long ago.  One ov my favorite mainstream movies for sure.  Sure it's a hollywoodized version and very loosely based on the real Peltier story, but it's very charming.

I decided to finally watch Michael Apted's documentary ov the incident from the same year late last night, on the 41st anniversary ov the pine ridge incident.  While his movie exposed the plight ov the Indians, it had a happy ending.  This documentary told the real story ov the events and Peltier is still locked up.  It's biased, but only because ov the obviousness that Peltier was railroaded and used as a political scapegoat.  A straight forward doc, but very effectual.

It's a crazy story.  Idiot FBI agents chase someone for stealing fucking cowboy boots into the res where the political climate has led to extreme violence and 60 unresolved murders in two years committed against traditional Indians.  Not knowing who they were, they get killed by the Indians who were just looking to protect the woman and children from these unknown intruders.  After extradition to the U.S., one ov the people present is clearly set up to take the fall despite no evidence that he killed the agents amidst a trial that included obvious witness fabrication and FBI intimidation.

Oh yes, he is terrible.  In my never ending quest to watch every second ov footage Jan-Michael Vincent has been involved in, the last movie i saw was Jurassic Women(1996).  Despite being a lousy no-budget troma tv flick, it did actually engage some philosophical ponderings and is surely a better watch than a two hundred million dollar Roland Emmerich blockbuster.

Raging Bull(1980)

Are you kidding me?  That's supposed to be one ov the greatest movies ov all time?  I thought it sucked.  Even as far as boxing movies are concerned, the original Rocky was infinitely better.  Not to hate on anyone involved, but it just did'nt do it for me.  I mean, Scorsese is no Jarman or Kusturica but he's a really good director IMO.  Everything else i've seen ov his like the gangster flicks and the wolf of wall street i really enjoyed.  But this?  Sorry.  Respect, but cant get on with it at all.  Easy acting, fake choreography, and just plain stupid.

I appreciate your response, Brian Jones.  That was well structured and respectful.  I have to stick with my opinion that Raging Bull is a piece ov shit though.  A co-worker agreed so i'm not alone.  I was'nt impressed by any element ov it at all.  Sorry.

The last movie i saw was Promise Me This(Zavet).  The subtitling was terrible but it's no matter.  Emir Kusturica's work is all fantastic.  I'm in love with his style.

On a war movie kick, are we?  Yeah, spr is certainly iconic.  I would say my favorite war movie though would have to be Cross of Iron.  Here's my review ov it from last year:

Will Penny(1967)
Been a while since i've seen this one.  A fine atypical western for the time.  A story ov heartbreaks, hard truths, companionship, and a subdued romance in hard country.  Good acting on the part ov all the main characters.  My only qualm is in the unrealistic timing ov certain events in the film.  Charlton Heston is said to have considered it his favorite role.  I find it funny that the young boy in the picture later played Napolean Dynamite's uncle Rico.

"Oh, 8 maybe 9 times"

Woah, this is really full on.  It's Nicholas Winding Refn's first movie, and was done on a low budget, but man is it convincing.  It's about criminals, and the lead character who is essentially a psychopath.  It reminds me a lot of Grand Theft Auto actually.  I found this movie frightening at some points.  The characters I found very unlikable, because they're really just terrible people, but I already want to watch it again.

You had me intrigued so i watched it.  Yeah, that was good shit.  Gritty atmosphere and an immense sense ov desperation trying to get out ov a dire situation while constantly getting fucked along the way.  I love the ending when Vic took all that and bolted.  We're left with ambiguity but at that point i really think he would have went to the cops instead ov dealing with Milo.  Yeah, unlikeable characters mostly although i did really like Vic.  Good acting actually.  Well done for a directorial debut with a low budget.  Anyway, thanks for the recommendation.  I think it's from '96 though btw, not '99.

Yeah, eraserhead and blue velvet are great.  Eraserhead is such a good horror movie because it does'nt need scare at all to make the viewer uncomfortable.  A scare is only fleeting discomfort.  The best horror movies have an uncomfortable atmosphere throughout.  And it's just a damn good WTF? movie.

Sausage Party(2016)

Hehe. LOL.  That was cute, clever, and funny.  Many giggles were had.  They really did a good job at satirizing humanity through this food world.

God Loves Caviar(2012)

I had a hankering for caviar today.  Unfortunately, i do not know where to get the good stuff locally so i had to settle for romanoff lumpfish roe atop English clotted cream and French baguette.  I subsequently watched this movie about the greek pirate/hero turned caviar entrepreneur and benefactor.  It was based on the story ov Ioannis Varvakis, but dramatized and not historically accurate.

Here we have a movie which could have been great, but was significantly let down by several factors.  As the movie spans his entire adult life in several year phases, there simply is'nt enough time to really delve into the story leading up to the critical moments ov the film.  Although there were captivating parts and some deep dialog, the movie came across as snapshot ov his life rather than a progressive culturing ov his character and those around him.  It's a great story though.  With a powerful director, it could have been pulled off as a 3 hour epic.

I also did not like that it came off too American and Varvakis was played by German-born Sebastian Koch.  He did a fine job acting, but he did'nt convince me that he was playing a Greek.  In fact, i would have preferred to see this movie with Greek actors in Greek with English subtitles.  There's a passion to the Greeks that seemed missing in this movie.  Although shot in Greece, it just seemed like it tried too hard to be an American movie(which is'nt a bad thing by any means, just not fitting for a movie ov this nature IMO).  All that being said, the score was good and there were some very pretty scenes.

I'm off to have more lumpfish roe.

Aria(1987)

Ten directors take on the task ov creating short films based upon their visionary interpretations ov particular arias.  A swell concept and some are great, but i can surely see how this may not be well received by many.  It is very much an artistic portrayal ov these ten arias which permeate the film.  Anyway, artsy fartsy as it may be, it surely has its beautiful and fun moments.  My favorite segments are the trippy comedy from Julien Temple, the passionate and ultimately tragic short from Franc Roddam, the astral sojourn by Ken Russell, and ov course, Derek Jarman's simple yet beautiful autumnal bit.  My least favorite was Jean-Luc Godard's segment based on the inattentiveness ov males and the inner frustrations ov their female servants.  That bit was overly obvious and did'nt come to any resolution, although it reminded ov something Kenneth Anger might do without any penetrating symbolism expected from the latter.

Anyway, each segment would have to be reviewed which i have'nt the patience for, but i did enjoy the movie in part.  Interestingly, Orson Welles agreed to do a segment and asked for a contract to be sent.  He died before receiving such, and the contract found its way to the funeral parlor he was laid out at.  The producer is unawares ov whether or not it was Welles' doing.

The Thomas Crown Affair (1968)

Really great.  Norman Jewison has directed and produced some fabulous movies throughout his career.  Another good one was In the Heat of the Night.  They made some lame remake of this a few years ago, which is ridiculous.  This movie should never have been remade.  One of the coolest opening sequences (including the bank heist) I've seen.

It's been a long time since i've seen this one.  I remembered your review here and decided to watch it again tonight.  It's a good watch.  I love a good caper flick and this one is interesting as it does'nt focus much on the actual caper but rather leads one to ponder on the motive, creating a great character study.  I see that some have said that McQueen was out ov character here but they're dead wrong.  He was absolutely perfect for this role as his demeanor exudes mystery and complexity.

I have problems with it though.  Some things just transpired too easy and clean.  Aso, Faye Dunaway's character is built up to be a power sleuthing superwoman, but fails to see that he never had true feelings for her(IMO) and is easily duped in he end.  His manipulation was selfish while her own created a schism between her feelings for him and her obligation to the insurance investigation, and ultimately led to her failing in the situation's obvious untenability.

But i did like it and it was a great Mcqueen role.  A nice cat and mouse movie, just not nearly as engaging as, say, The Sting.  I agree that In the Heat of the Night is fantastic.

Geez djmako7!

Steve McQueen, Man and Lemans- A doc on Mr Cool and the making ov LeMans. It had its parts but it was annoyingly repetive.  Lemans is a crazy movie though. Anyone not into cars would hate it since there's hardly any dialog. But i am and it's just so visceral. The sounds are just so amazing. Best racing movie along with Gran Prix imo.

Rewatches:

My Big Fat Greek Wedding- It's pretty funny and stuff. I love Greeks.

Big Jake- I love a good John Wayne flick. Always great fun.
