Midnight Special: 9/10

Great movie but you might hate the ending.

White God - 2016

9/10

This movie is currently on Netflix streaming and I HIGHLY recommend it if you're a fan of movies and would say it's a much watch if you're a dog owner.

Think Homeward Bound but one that's made for adults.  It's a foreign language flick. If you can commit to watching the first 20 mins (starts off a tad slow) you won't be able to turn away from it after that.  It's an amazing film with a great storyline and beautiful cinematography.

If the trailer doesn't get you jacked to watch it then you should just go ahead and get yourself lobotomized...

Popstar:  Never Stop Never Stopping

8/10.  I went in with low expectations but the movie is pretty hilarious.

John Wick - 2014 - 8/10

It stars Keanu Reeves who plays a mourning widow/briefly retired hitman who seeks vengeance on a group of thugs who stole his car and killed his puppy that was a gift from his recently deceased wife.

I'm pretty sure the body count in this movie is double that of Total Recall.

Not an intricate plot by any means, but highly entertaining nonetheless.

Carnage Park - 2016

6.5/10

From Rotten Tomatoes:

This pure-pulp thrill ride jumps between past and present as it pieces together the puzzle of a shocking crime. It's 1978 and a bank robbery gone wrong leaves Vivian (The Last Exorcism's Ashley Bell) the hostage of two criminals on the run. But things go from bad to off-the-rails berserk when she and her captors wind up on the sun-baked desert outpost of a deranged ex-military sniper (Pat Healy), who ensnares them in his deadly game of cat and mouse. Rising horror auteur Mickey Keating (Pod, Darling) directs this gritty, grisly homage to the glory days of grindhouse cinema.

Just re-watched it last night for the first time since it was released. I like the concept and its one of the few well done mockumentaries

Sounds interesting and is highly reviewed online...ripping it right now!!!

I love finding movies that are a bit underrated or are on the "movies you probably haven't seen" lists.  Time will tell if this one is underrated but I imagine it would fall in the latter for sure.

Below are a few that I'm assuming most haven't seen but I recommend checking them out.  They happen to be nearly all foreign flicks.  I've seen so many fucking movies it's a rarity when a good domestic flick is released and that I don't eventually watch.  At least in the last 25 years...PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG IF YOU HAVE SOME YOU WOULD LIKE TO RECOMMEND

Let Me In (or the foreign version Let the Right One In) - Vampire movie, told from the point of view of the vampire and the people trying to protect her.

Battle Royale - this is basically the story Hunger Games ripped off and then made all family friendly.

The Chaser - crooked cop tries tracking down a serial killer.

Oldboy (not Spike Lee's shit version) - hard to describe.  Just watch it.

White God - kind of like homeward bound but for adults.

IP Man (1 and 2, I haven't seen 3 yet) - The true-ish story of the guy that trained Bruce Lee in martial arts.

Is anybody watching The Night Of on HBO?  Not a movie but it kind of plays like one.  Highly recommend.  Episode 4 (of 8) airs tonight.

Money Monster

5/10

And that's probably being a little generous because the movie, plot, and ending were all garbage.  Good performances though by the main characters.

I'm planning to watch The Shining in the next few days - it has been at least 15 yrs since I've seen it, and I know I would have a newfound appreciation for it now that I'm a bit older.

I recently learned about the documentary called Room 237, which is a movie about a movie basically - all things The Shining and the hotel it was filmed at.

Have you seen it?  Should I watch the movie first or the documentary first?

My gut tells me I should watch the documentary first since the movie is a Kubrick.  I feel that his movies often require several times watching before you really know what's going on.  Im mean shit, i've seen Space Odyssey at least 10 times and I still don't even fully understand it.

The Nice Guys

8/10

Good movie that doesn't take itself too serious.  Plenty of laughs and shootouts and I really liked the retro feel.  It's kinda Starsky and Hutch-esque only far better.

The Shining

10/10

Man am I glad I watched that movie again!!!  Kubrick is just the best.  I've seen Full Metal Jacket, Clockwork Orange, and 2001.  I actually didn't see 2001 until about 10 months ago...I know this is a bold statement, but I think it might be my favorite movie of all time.

I think next up is going to be Dr. Strangelove or Barry Lyndon.

Yes Kubrick is my favorite director by far.

One thing I've noticed about his films more than any other director, is that it consumes every bit of me not only while I;m watching his movies, but also in the days if not weeks afterwards.  Pretty much all I thought about today was the movie and my viewing experience from last night.  I bet that'll be with me through the weekend, if not beyond.

Yeah his movies definitely have a lasting impact, and are the most cerebral movies I've come across from any director.  Another thing is, you can watch them over and over and not get sick of them.  They are so rich and multi-layered that you can continue to draw new conclusions even after several watches.  The only problem with Kubrick is that he made so few movies.  It would have been nice if he had been a little more prolific, but then again, perhaps the extra time spent in preparation was what made them so amazing.

I had this same thought today and came to the same conclusion.  Instead of a shit ton of movies, he only did a few but was so meticulous in his making of them.

Another thing I really dig about him is that he jumped around to so many different genres and thus far from what I've seen, has nailed each of them.

Will we ever have another director with a big budget that didn't sell out to the studios?  I read something last night that said the studios gave him carte blanche.  Does anybody get that these days?  He was so artistic but not in an artsy-fartsy way.  And I love that he didn't deliver movies/plots that were wrapped up with a pretty little bow and gave you every answer you were looking for.  I think that's what made 2001 and The Shining so special.  So mysterious.

And I completely agree about watching his movies over and over again and not getting tired of them.  Ill likely watch The Shining again within the next few weeks and it'll be a completely different experience.  When i watched 2001 for the first time about 10 months ago (on about 300mics) I was absolutely fucking floored.  And then watched it again that night after I stopped tripping, and then again a few days later.  I would say that I've seen it a total of 8-10 times since the first watch, and I haven't come even close to getting tired of it.

I haven't seen Spring Breakers and hadn't planned on it, but maybe I should give it a shot.

Drive was badass.  Loved the soundtrack too.  That scene on the beach when he's in the mask haunted my dreams for a bit.

Fury Road was pretty badass too.  One of the best sequels in years.

Also want to add that Fury Road is phenomenal while tripping.  The plot is easy to follow and the colors are insane.

Europa Report - 8.5/10

It's one of those "found footage" movies of a group of astronauts that go to one of jupiters moons to look for life beneath the icey surface.

I've fallen asleep to Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates the last 3 nights in a row and haven't made it to the end.

I know that's a terrible endorsement but I've just been exhausted each time I've tried watching it.

It's stupid funny.  Not worth buying, but maybe worth a rip or worth a watch once it's on Netflix, etc.

I think the workaholics guy is pretty funny (and he's from Iowa so that's a bonus in my book) and I'm a big fan of Anna Kendrick and Aubrey Plaza...super down to earth chicks if you've ever read or watched any of their interviews.

6-7/10
