Rosemary's Baby 6/10
The plot did not draw me in but the set was a bit lavish.

Out of the Rain (1991) 3/10
What a poor excuse for a lead character. Michael O'Keefe is unbelievably stiff. He would do better reading his lines off of cue cards. Otherwise depressing and produced in a lackadaisical manner. The ending kind of delivered though. The movie gets one or two points for that and another point for Bridget Fonda.

Hearts of Darkness: A Film Maker's Apocalypse is a pretty good documentary on the making of that film.

Léon: the Professional 8/10
What a film. It tackled so many controversies I doubt I could name them all, but I will try... Sex with minors (in NYC), love and minors, excessive gore in film, the dangers of women / girls in the life of men (maybe this is just me being a misogynist, but I feel like without Matilda's presence, Léon wouldn't have ended up where he ended up), how adults should deal with the rebellious nature of children, the morality (or rather the lack thereof) of revengeful acts, the effects of immigration (you get people like Léon), murdering children below the age of 5, criminal codes of behavior, legitimizing the humanity of hardened killers... i could go on.
At no point in this film was I bored. There was always something going on - something to make me paranoid about what would happen next. It was definitely a very sad movie, but there was a single strand of hope left in the final scene, although I am not very confident about what would happen next. In fact, the ending might be my least favorite part of the movie, but it's a tragedy so who could blame me? And that plastic plant. I feel like I am missing some symbolism here... As if it represented the plastic nature of life, if you will forgive the apparent oxymoron, the inability of people to be swayed out of thinking one way or grouping themselves with certain individuals that implies upholding a moral code. I have no idea. That came straight out of my ass. But it is how I perceived the movie. Most of the action took place because of the predetermined code of conduct decided upon by criminal organizations and legal organizations (police, for example) that invariably wind up in each others business. That's not to say each character did not have his or her own thoughts and desires, but I do think that each of them acted in such a way that it was apparent that they held themselves responsible to a higher power - that power being the organization or boss they worked for. That's also not to say that each character is not flawed, because they are. That's what makes the movie so relatable even though I may never hold a gun in my life. I feel like entire volumes could be written on each character because their personalities are that palpable in this film. Maybe it's just me. This might seem overly unintuitive because I've been reading a lot of Jung and Bible commentaries lately.
Also Natalie Portman at 12 years old and the meaning of the end/turn of the century in 1994.

Although Matilda and Léon don't have sex, Matilda did ask Léon to have sex with her. I remember Matilda saying that losing her virginity to someone she truly loved was important to her because it would determine the fate of her love life. Since she declares her love for Léon, she wants her first time to be with him. In that way the issue was brought up but not explored in much (physical) depth. Like you said, Léon's sense of morality is put in the spotlight in this instance. He explains that he is still not "over" his ex-girlfriend. He is a killer with human emotions. Your take on the plant in the ending gives me food for thought. Not sure why I thought it was fake.

The youtube user Leather Rebel Justice used to have a funny mst3k-esque riff of Altered States on his page. I think it's gone now, though. I'm always surprised to read good reviews for that movie. It seems too ridiculous to consider watching all the way through. Oddly enough it came up in a 20th century music course I took a while back. I guess the soundtrack is groundbreaking or something. I didn't pay attention.

The Purple Rose of Cairo 4/10
Interesting idea but flawed execution. There were so many things that could have happened, but very little occurred in the space of 82 minutes. It was just uninteresting. To be fair, there is a limited amount a two-dimensional character can do. It did give an interesting perspective of how people deal with the extreme highs and lows of life.

Tough Guys Don't Dance 9/10
I have terrible taste in movies, I admit it. This one was incredibly in your face in terms of how ironic it was. Just painfully funny. In one word the plot of the movie is whiskey. Drinking truly is the linchpin of this film. That and poor acting. The kind that's so bad it's good if you can decipher what emotion the actors are not evincing. If I had to use more than one word to describe the plot I would be lost, because the scenes were so unconnected and winding that nearly nothing made sense and nearly nothing was in proper sequence. Penn Jillette is in it for a minute, though, so that's good.

Don't ever watch Beloved.
I watched Götz Friedrich's Salome last weekend. It wasn't great or terrible but hey it was a TV Movie. Apparently 6 out of 6 IMDB users loved it. Mainly watched it so I would listen to the music all the way through. Performed by the Vienna Philharmonic. Good stuff.
