mushrooms of nw arkansas pics
    #1569865 - 05/22/03 04:33 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

i have been finding mushrooms all over the place lately. these pictures are here for all to enjoy. i'll provide info about them when time permits, so they can be identified. i'll update as often as possible.

today's find:

found these growing in the grass on campus (sporeprints are in the making):

edit: these didn't drop any spores yet...still waiting to see if they do.

found in a woodchip bed. they were growing in clusters:

spore print is very light; looks brown. stem solid.

found this on campus in the grass, obviously baked by the sun:

sporeprint black. mushroom turned into...well, just mush

upload reached...more pics, info, and spore prints on the way.

another i found growing out of grass and dirt. i don't know what it is.

saved this from a redneck with a weedeater. i guess he has something against shrooms, because he was taking out the whole patch...and seemed to be getting much pleasure out of it.

more later....

i have no clue what these mushrooms are.

this was a little wierd. while dissecting the mushroom, i noticed it had a few different layers to it's cap, so i skinned it. this is the pic is of the "skin," seperated from the gills:

is that more like the real color.

lets hope someone else comes in here and helps you with the id. i have been blasting my brain with mushrooms all day for the last 5 days. i need a break for a while. maybe later i will help you out if you beg  although its quite simple. if you have a decent book of mushrooms with keys than you could at least find out the generas of those mushrooms. start with the family, since they are all obviously agaricales (gilled mushrooms). the spore print will tell you a lot with agaricales. LATER

You've got a lot of stuff coming up. Interesting specimens.

For the ones in your first post:

We need a spore print for the first one to get to genus. Nice looking specimen, though.
The second one looks like an Agrocybe, probably in the Agrocybe praecox group.
The third one is a Coprinus.

From the second set of photos, the one with the bulbous stem (Pict0008 group) looks a lot like a Tricholoma. It's immature, and that makes identification tougher. What kind of tree was it growing near?
The dark gilled one in the Pict0009 group looks like some sort of Agaricus. It looks a bit old, too. To have any chance at identification we need to know what it smells like and the bruising reactions. Please cut it in half vertically and scrape the inside with your knife blade (not gently - you're trying to bruise the flesh). Then watch for color changes. They can take up to an hour, but most will occur within a few minutes.

From the third set of photos, the one with the very crowded, very white gills looks like a Collybia. What kind of trees were nearby?
The second one suggests Psathyrella to me.

The fourth set of photos look like Coprinus, similar to Coprinus comatus, as irolltrss suggested. If they are, then you got to them while they were really young. Again, if they are, then in a few hours the gills should turn black and begin degenerating into ink-like slime. An odd feature you can use to help identify these while fresh is to cut one in half vertically. In Coprinus comatus the stem will be hollow with one thin thread running down the center. There will be no bruising.

Hope that helps some.

Happy mushrooming!

i found that one a couple weeks ago. i believe it was growing nearest to an oak, but there are also ginkos and a cedar nearby.

it was on a freshly seeded and strawed hillside, with some oaks and maples.

yes, they were coprinus. i went back to check on the clusters i left behind for the next few days. they got bigger and when they opened up, they looked like the classic coprinus pictures you see in id books. then they turned into giant masses of black slime, covered with flies ready to spread the spores around.

now, for today's pics:
Xerula is my guess on this first one. it has a root stem and left a massive, thick white sporeprint.

next: Paneolus ? i'll see if i can get a pic of the print later. this was growing in tall grass.

upload reached...more to come.

beautiful pics. i would agree on Xerula id for the first one.

since im in the library, i cant verify the id on the second one. it sure looks like a panaeolus from the side but the gills dont look much like panaeolus.

are the mushrooms in your second post yellow or is it simply the lighting?
if they are, i must say Leucocoprinus birnbaumii comes to mind. it used to be Lepiota lutea.
http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Leucocoprinus_birnbaumii.html

in the spore print of the Pan-like species, what is the color of the print exactly? is it brown or are those reddish tints really in the print?

the small brown mushroom are tough to id because of the lack of detailed pics, a good description, or a spore print. are they agaricales or boletales?

1. the mushrooms were more of a tan color, but there was a hint of yellow in the younger fruits.
2. the print is a light brown color with no reddish tints.
3. i am not sure which small brown mushroom you are referring to, but it is
definitely agaricales; i have not posted any boletales yet.

more boletes and a xerula:

i don't know what these are, but they are the worst smelling mushrooms i have ever found. they smell like bleach. the spore print was cream colored. i found them growing in the grass under the same tree i found the boletes.

in your second set of photos right above this post:

1. Russula sp. it may be hard to identify to species though because of its deformity. Russula's are tough anyway. look around R. rubbipurpurea (not sure on the spelling) or R. mariae. it is some kind of red russula obviously.

2. definately a boletus species looking at the features. intense yellow pores, bruising blue.

3. the LBM's, no idea. need details and spore print.

4. more Russula's obviously. if you get a decent Russula key, they should be a bit easier to id because of there prominent odor.

nice finds.
