Think i bought the wrong jars *face palm* Will these do?

This is my first grow and im really looking forward to getting started! Everything is working out fine so far, and i am about to start the substrate because my jars arrived today. After unwrapping them though i was unsure. I purchased half pint (250ml) wide mouth ball mason jars.

I'm unsure because as you can see from the pic, the jar's opening isnt as wide as the body, and im worried tipping the jar over and lightly slamming the 100% colonized substrate out wont work. What do you all think? Im in Australia, and i couldnt find 240-250 ml jars ANYWHERE (we dont have walmart) and have to order online

Dont think it would work much if you did the pf brf kinda substrate. Wbs on the other hand would work. Basically if you dont mind it in pieces sure, otherwise a full cake wont come out of that.
However you could just fruit from the jar itself when it got to that point if thats all you have to work with. Just wrap the sides and bottom up so no light can get through like a monotub would be for the light penetration.

The problem with tall jars is that the substrate can get too densely packed at the bottom and it won't colonize. So make sure you don't make the cakes too tall.

will it matter having exactly 240ml of substrate (including dry verm layer) and all the empty space on top inside? Ill be using a steam technique to sterilize the substrate

Just pop down your local £/$ store and pick up a glass hammer that is if you don't mind losing the jars at the end. Over in the UK we only have like 1 specific jam brand which uses open mouthed jars and even ordering online means we have to order from the US and it gets very expensive hence the reason I just save up old jam jars, pickle jars etc and use them and smash with glass hammer once colonized.
Of course this should be last resort and short whiskey glasses/ drink glasses and a whole range of other products are out there you could use but just an idea if you can't send your jars back and have no other use for them and don't mind breaking them of course if you paid a fair amount I wouldn't go down this route.

i imagine you could just leave them to fruit in vitro, because it doesnt seem like the cakes would just fall right out of them.

Just order some jars. They're cheap, and imo there's no better substitute

Perhaps not, but the plastic half pint containers are pretty nice to work with. And widely more available.

Hey dude, fellow aussie here.... Check out aussi mushroom supplies. They have everything you need, they deliver quick and are cheaper than redback trading co; a 12 pack of jars is around $30. They have PC's, jars, brf, verm, perlite, agar supplies and heaps more. I have used them a few times now and I would recommend them to any aussie in need of mushroom growing supplies.
